Interview with LEZEN

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My debut album (which you can stream here: https://open.spotify.com/album/56bOFn6Rp2iIe9n41nOJH1?si=jyxa7kshRdaIKu2ta-epFg ) - I did EVERYTHING on this album, and it took me a very long time to finish it. It's very much a "line in the sand" moment for me though - cut the ties of the old, and step forward into the new!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My main artist moniker, LEZEN, as well as other production aliases including Anderson and Miguel Sanchez.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Lots of producers / artist! Just reach out to me and I can steer you in the right direction - there's no such thing as a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to music.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, purely for workflow perspectives and cost. If anyone wants to sponsor me $50,000 so I can buy dedicated outboard gear, then let me know! ;)

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will always do my best to ensure your needs are met!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being able to express myself through music

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I usually get asked "How do I get my music to sound like [insert artist here]", to which the answer is usually: "Practice!"

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I must ONLY like Dance Music... Tell that to Spotify having Queens Of The Stone Age as my top artist!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What other artists do you want this to sound like? Who is your biggest musical inspiration? The more I can understand the client as a person, the more likely I am going to be able to meet your needs.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be afraid to ask questions!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Macbook Pro, Sennheiser HD25s, UAD Apollo Twin X Duo, my iPhone and a power bank!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been DJ'ing since 2011, but got into production in 2014. I've always had a love of music, so stepping into all things production and performance has given me an outlet I could've only ever dreamed of growing up!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Progressive and Aggressive (also the name of my independent record label, P&A Records)

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Any of the Swedes - Axwell, Ingrosso, Angello, Prydz, all legends!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't give in to "analysis paralysis" - get your idea down first, THEN decide if it's good or not!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I typically work on EDM, Bass and Pop genres, however I have also dabbled more in Ambient, Synthwave and other 'retro' genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My empathetic nature (and maybe my sense of optimism!)

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Decades of music knowledge, countless hours of production expertise, a keen ear for what makes a hit, and local connections within Australia's music industry that are invaluable.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It's dependant on the client - for my own productions, I love being as creative as possible and seeing what sparks my interest. For external clients, I start with the end in mind; "What is the end result you want from this brief?", and then working backwards to "What do we need to get there?"

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from home in a dedicated studio setup. I have an extensive collection of VSTs to pair with my DAW of choice (Ableton) along with various hardware synths, high quality monitors and a UAD Apollo Twin X Duo interface. I can also record vocals from home, so if you have any singer / songwriters nearby who need to be recorded, let me know!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I grew up listening to classic pop and rock records on Mum's side, along with classical and jazz on Dad's side. For me, I've been a fan of Electronic Dance Music since the early 2000s, so plenty of experience to draw upon! Right now, I'm a big fan of the "behind the scenes" gurus - the ones who make sh!t happen! Tom Staar, Deniz Koyu, Chris Avantgarde, Corey James, Will K... These are just some of my favourite producers who inspire my technical output, while artists like Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia, Justice, Pendulum and Chase & Status inspire me musically.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am experienced in producing, mixing and mastering original musical compositions for club and radio environments. I also have extensive experience producing and hosting radio programs, so along with my decades of experience as a music consumer, I bring a unique perspective of "A&R-ing" my own work / client's work fit for radio consumption.
