Interview with Marcus Hyatt

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I work in two locations, our public studio space, an old house built in 1910 that we have converted into a very nice and vibey studio. 5 large rooms that we can disperse musicians into, all of the equipment standards you would expect of a professional facility, Pro tools, Focal Monitors, Cue systems etc. And lots, lots, lots of vintage microphone options, and PLENTY of outboard gear to choose from. Universal Audio, Tube Tech, Vintech, Martech, Chandler Limited, Drawmer, Etc. I also have a mixing room at home where I mix a lot of my projects, that room leans more towards in the box, just because of the convenience of being able to pick up a session and move elsewhere if needed. But I still have some outboard gear that I use when mixing certain records when I feel like I need it.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both, always both. Why not keep both options open, there is goodness in both options. Don't ever handcuff yourself just for a debate.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: I love these questions, my first and foremost answer has always been and will continue to be Melodyne. You can cure a multitude of sins with that one. For my other four options, I would probably take a solid mic, perhaps a Nuemann M149 personally, a nice preamp, I love my John Hardy M1s. From there I would probably take a CL-1B, and a Bricasti.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I work on just about anything, given the surroundings of where I am now based there is definitely an increase of Country, Bluegrass and Gospel music that comes across my desk. But that has not stopped me from keeping my feet wet in many other genres, most consistently, pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I'm inspired by everyone in the industry that is doing something successful. I believe you can learn and garner inspiration from just about everyone, no matter their expertise compared to yours. Big fan of the work of engineers like, Serban Ghenea, Bart Busch, Derek Bason, Brandon Bell, there are many more but those are some guys I am either around more frequently or specifically admire aspects of their work I would like to emulate or draw from. Also, many producers and session musicians can trigger inspiration just with their creativity and/or knowledge of their instrument. I think of names such as, Jenee Fleenor, Ben Isaacs, Bryon Sutton, Mike Johnson, Gordon Mote, Etc.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: The most common work I do is probably recording and mixing full projects, and all that is entailed within that. However, I have many clients that I do just do, just recording or just mixing. Many that hire me specifically for vocal tuning and editing, and others that hire me for live sound to mix their concerts.
