Session guitarist with 25 years professional experience across indie, alternative, blues, soul and artist-led projects. I focus on serving the song - tone, feel and parts that elevate the track. I also have credits in writing, production and mixing, enabling me to support the wider production and deliver finished masters if needed.
I’m a UK-based session guitarist with 25 years’ experience across indie, alternative, blues, soul and artist-led projects.
My focus is simple: serve the song. That means finding the right tone, feel and parts that support the vocal and arrangement, rather than overplaying or overcomplicating what’s already there.
I can work from references, rough demos or a simple idea, and I’m comfortable building parts from scratch where needed. Whether it’s subtle texture, rhythm work or more defined lead parts, the goal is always the same - make the track feel complete.
Alongside session work, I have extensive experience in writing, production and mixing. That means I’m able to think beyond the guitar itself and support the wider direction of the track where useful.
I keep the process straightforward and collaborative. Send over your track, any notes or references, and I’ll take care of the rest.
If you’re unsure what the song needs, feel free to reach out- I’m happy to listen and offer honest feedback.

Interview with Dave Doherty
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s the role of the guitar in the track? Are there reference songs you like? What feeling or direction are you aiming for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Share a rough mix and a couple of references, and be clear about what you like or don’t like. The more context I have, the better I can serve the song.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Tasteful, musical and song-focused. I aim to add character and interest without getting in the way.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly indie, alternative and singer-songwriter material, from organic/acoustic tracks through to more atmospheric or electronic-influenced productions.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Understanding what a song needs and delivering parts that feel right quickly, without overcomplicating things.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, feel and restraint. I focus on what the song needs rather than what I can play, finding parts that support the vocal and or enhance the emotional impact.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I’ll ask for a rough mix and any references, then quickly put together one or two directions. From there we refine based on what serves the song best. The process is collaborative but efficient.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Purpose built. Modest. Trusted. Hybrid [analogue / ITB]
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I’m typically brought in to record electric or acoustic guitar parts for artist-led tracks. Most work is focused on adding tone, feel and musical parts that support the vocal and elevate the arrangement.
