Interview with Michael Vail Blum -Titan Music
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their place...Sometimes I use both in one project
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do everything I can to achieve your musical goals.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to know and work with lots of talented Artists and all different styles of music....it's never boring!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only do certain types of music...I love working with ALL types of music and I try my best to bring out the musicality in all projects
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What music and/or artists do you love that motivated you to do your own music
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I really enjoy working with artists that are dedicated to the music and their artistry.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I would say that getting to know the artist and what music they resonate with and what their music is all about. This helps me in working with the artist to help translate the artists musical vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Songs that inspire are able to communicate to an audience through lyric, melody, rhythm and performance. Clearly, a composition that is commercially successful has three elements: a great song, a great performance and a great recording. I work to bring the best out in all of these elements.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Firstly, I try to get to know and have a conversation with the Artist so I learn what the artist is all about artistically and what their expectation is for the project. I also, like to get to know what their influences are and who their market is. My roll is to help the Artist achieve their musical vision, so my process is always focused on that, whatever form that takes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have worked on all styles of music from heavy rock to pop to R&B to smooth jazz
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: ProTools HD, Neve console, API Mic Preamps, Neumann Microphones, Vintage compressors, Tannoy SRM 10b and Mastering Lab Speakers...The studio has a comfortable artistic feel where clients can set up and feel at home.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work with Artists from whatever stage the project is in, from tracking to final master. I spend most of my time mixing and mastering
