Interview with Brett Nelson
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Typically I work on Pop, Rock, Country, and R&B/Soul.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is adaptability. Hearing what a song is missing for a part is everything, but not every song or project is needing the same sound. Being able to play different styles in an authentic way is my main goal.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have been exposed to, and studied all types of music from Gustav Mahler to Earth, Wind, and Fire. I love everything from Folk to Funk and in between. Blending the experience of playing so many styles allows me to bring pieces of the different styles together to whatever the main focus on the project is.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Step one, and probably the most important step, to me is to listen. I want to hear the style and message of a song that will influence how I play. My concern on how to interpret that is by understanding what the artist's goal is. If it is a soft ballad or a funky R&B song, listening to instructions helps for overall success and satisfaction.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run Logic Pro on my Mac to record. I record through a Focusrite Scarlett either direct from either amp or Line 6 Helix, as well as, mic up my bass cabinet and guitar amps for warm, clear sounds that can be edited in post by whatever production is needed.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love the stories of musicians like Prince and Stevie Wonder playing the many different instrument parts for their records. My favorite musicians on different records as musicians are people like Nathan East, Marcus King, and Isaiah Sharkey because they all bring their own unique sound without taking away from the song that may not be released by them.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My main focus is understanding the vision for a song, and helping to create with the artist's vision in mind. I typically record tracks for guitar and bass, and will send the ready to use stems.
