Interview with derico biagetti
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of the work I did with Irene Effe, as a Producer, guitarist and lyrics composer. I still think it’s a little gem, home produced.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m into some independent artist recordings right now. Today I recorded some mandolin stuff.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Piero Perelli. Tuscanian fellow, Drums Master. Great playing and feel. Bless him.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both of them. There’s a special place in between and that’s exactly where I like to stay.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is: I won’t let you down. Simple. If I say I can do it, I will. Otherwise I’d say no.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I can make money playing my instruments. I love it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Are you sure it’s what the song needs?” “Yes, I am.” Sometimes people just need to feel some confidence from you.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I do a lot of things and sometimes people can’t understand I am able to have multiple roles. I studied a lot to make it work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What would you like to obtain from my work? What kind of vibe do you like?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you want raw yet clean tone and energy, atmosphere and some picking, I’m your man.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Gibson 335, Martin 00028, Marshall bluesbreaker, my macbook and an apogee duet. But I’d have to put a mic somewhere!!!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a guitarist and then I began to learn music production. My path is very similar to other people’s one: get the job and get it done correctly.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Eclectic yet rooted.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Sam Fender. I love his scottish mood.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If it sounds good, just leave it as it is!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Alt-Rock, Pop-Rock, Blues, Rock Blues, Delta Blues, Indie, Americana, Folk, Country
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest one is to understand what a song needs.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always try to be functional. I bring energy and atmosphere, using sounds that emphasise what the writer did.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually want to listen to the song, then I ask what the client would like to obtain from my performance. I offer my vision of the sound/arrangement I would like to craft and then I start working. I send an example track of the job to the client, just to make sure we’re on the same vibe and after authorization, I get to finish the job. Then I polish the tracks I recorded and make them shine with some analog vitamins!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is simple yet functional: I have my MacPro with an Apogee audio interface, my DAW is Logic Pro and my preamp is SPL. Then I have my Warm Audio WA-76-d2. My monitors are Adam A7X and my main mics are Neumann tlm49, Brauner VM1, Shure Beta87-57-58. I even have an audio-technica matched pair for stereo sounds. My master keyboard is a Yamaha Arius Piano and an Arturia midi controller completes the setup.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The possibility of the blank space.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually cook guitar tracks (electric, acoustic, resophonic and classical). I make overdubs. I do editing work, polishing and vocal comping. I even usually do addictional production, adding atmosphere to the songs I work on.
