Interview with Jordan Holmes
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been writing my own original music since 2008 and recording music since 2014. My career path is playing shows full time while writing and recording for myself and others in my down time meeting great people in the industry along the way.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would consider my style to be 2000's pop punk with a modern take on the style itself.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists in the pop punk and emo scenes, because that’s where my passion and talents truly lie.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Give each instrument its own space in the mix. When recording or producing, make sure every part including guitars, bass, drums, vocals has its own frequency range and sonic space. This prevents the track from sounding muddy and makes each instrument stand out, giving the song clarity, punch, and emotional impact. Even small adjustments in volume, panning, or EQ can make a huge difference.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop punk, emo, and alternative rock, blending catchy hooks with emotional storytelling and dynamic arrangements. I focus on songs that are heartfelt and energetic, whether it’s driving guitars, melodic vocals, or layered instrumentation that gives each track depth and personality.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is turning ideas into complete songs that truly connect with listeners. As a strong lyricist, I can write words that feel honest, emotional, and memorable. As a songwriter, I craft melodies and structures that stick while capturing the right mood and energy. I also excel at arranging songs, finding solutions that make each section flow naturally, building dynamics that hit emotionally, and layering instruments in ways that give the track depth and movement. Essentially, I take the raw spark of a song and shape it into something that feels fully alive and impactful.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring heart and energy to every song I work on. That means writing lyrics and melodies that actually feel real, arranging parts so the song hits in all the right places, and layering guitars, bass, and drums to make it sound full and alive. I love helping ideas grow by tweaking riffs, adding textures, and experimenting until the song clicks while keeping the artist’s voice and emotion at the center.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Idea & Concept Development You start by connecting with the client to understand their vision, mood, and lyrical themes. Brainstorm melodies, riffs, or lyrical concepts—sometimes starting from a single line, chord progression, or emotional idea. 2. Lyric Writing & Melody Creation Craft lyrics that feel authentic and emotionally resonant. Experiment with vocal melodies that match the energy and vulnerability of the song. 3. Song Arrangement Structure the song: verses, choruses, bridges, breakdowns. Decide on dynamics, tension, and release to make the track impactful. Suggest harmonies, backing vocals, or counter-melodies to enhance emotional depth. 4. Instrument Tracking & Layering Record multi-layered guitar parts: rhythm, lead, textures. Add bass lines that support the groove and energy. Program drums or percussion to drive the song forward. Layer additional instruments or effects if needed to flesh out the sound. 5. Fleshing Out Ideas & Refinement Experiment with different arrangements, riffs, or sounds. Offer creative suggestions to strengthen the song and highlight its strongest parts. Iterate with the client until the track feels complete. 6. Final Touches / Demo Production Compile all parts into a polished demo or pre-production track. Provide guidance for vocals, mix-ready stems, or full rough mixes.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a couple different DAW's including Studio One and Reaper running a Focusrite Scarlett 4th generation interface. I have a few different mics but primarily use my Shure SM7B for all vocal recordings. I use Get Good Drums for programming drums and have countless plugins I use to achieve my sound all coming out through my ADAM Audio T7V active monitors. I also have several professionally set up guitars and basses on hand in multiple tunings to achieve a wide range of sounds and moods.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am heavily inspired by producer/singer/songwriter Deryck Whibley from Sum 41 as well as Chris Lorde Alge's work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help artists bring their songs to life, from writing heartfelt lyrics and arranging dynamic structures to recording multi-layered guitars, bass, and programmed drums. I collaborate closely to flesh out ideas, craft melodies, and shape tracks that feel authentic, powerful, and fully realized.
