Interview with David Virgen
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of my work with Jasfiore. My role involved full music production, arrangements, and session work. Seeing those songs resonate with thousands of people and maintaining a high standard of sonic quality confirmed my mission as a producer: to create music that moves the heart and sounds world-class.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently producing several singles for Contemporary Worship artists and finishing a Pop-Rock EP at Blackstone Records. I’m also managing visual productions for our film division, Antimateria, ensuring a cohesive 360° launch for my clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I am always open to collaborating with world-class mastering engineers on this platform to give my productions the final 5% they need. I believe in a community of excellence where everyone brings their best skill to the table.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid is the way. I love the warmth, harmonic saturation, and 'soul' of analog gear during the tracking phase at Blackstone. However, the precision and recall capabilities of digital tools in the mixing phase are unbeatable. I use the best of both worlds to get that 'expensive' sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise transparency, professional excellence, and emotional commitment. As a Line Producer, I promise to respect your deadlines and budget. As a musician, I promise to treat your song as if it were my own masterpiece.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The 'click' moment. That second when an artist hears their raw idea turned into a massive, professional production for the first time and realizes their music can actually compete at a global level. That transformation is why I do what I do.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask: 'Can you make my home-recorded vocals sound professional?' My answer is yes, through meticulous vocal production and elite signal chains at Blackstone Records. I focus on pitch, timing, and tone to ensure your voice sits perfectly in a world-class arrangement.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That a 'great mix' can fix a 'weak production.' I believe the magic happens in the arrangement and the tracking phase. My job isn't just to polish a track; it's to build a sonic architecture that makes the song stand out before the mixing even begins.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask: What is the 'soul' or the main message of this song? What are 3 reference tracks that represent your dream sound? And finally, what is your target release date? Knowing the 'why' and the 'when' allows me to manage the production at Blackstone efficiently.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for a producer who prioritizes your vision over their own ego. A great provider should be a bridge, not a barrier. My advice is to provide clear references and trust the process—professional results happen when there is a solid foundation of communication and shared goals.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My Fender Precision Bass (for the soul). 2. A Neumann U87 microphone (versatility at its best). 3. A Universal Audio Apollo interface (for those elite preamps). 4. My MacBook Pro with my favorite UAD plugins. 5. A pair of Focal monitors (to trust what I'm hearing).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been in the music industry for over a decade, evolving from a session musician into a full-scale producer and Line Producer. My journey led me to Blackstone Records, where I now lead the production division. This path has given me a 360-degree view of the industry—understanding both the artist's creative needs and the label's logistical demands.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is 'Modern Organic.' I love using high-end analog gear and real instruments to give a song soul and warmth, then polished with modern digital techniques to ensure it sounds massive and crisp. It’s about making the listener feel the emotion while providing a top-tier commercial sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like Charlie Puth or Ryan Tedder. Their ability to blend complex musicality with mainstream appeal is incredible. I also aspire to collaborate with innovative worship leaders who are pushing the boundaries of the genre, combining cinematic soundscapes with powerful, authentic messages.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on the 'pocket' and the foundation. A great track starts with the relationship between the bass and the kick. If the low end doesn't have the right groove and clarity, the rest of the production won't hit as hard. Also, always leave room for the vocal—every production choice should serve the singer's story.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Pop, Rock, Contemporary Worship, and R&B. My experience at Blackstone Records has allowed me to master the balance between the organic feel of live instruments—like electric bass and guitars—and the polished, high-energy sound required for modern radio and streaming hits.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my '360° Vision'—the ability to translate an artist's abstract vision into a polished, professional reality. As both a multi-instrumentalist and a Line Producer, I excel at finding the perfect balance between creative soul and technical excellence. Whether it’s locking in a world-class bass groove or managing a complex production timeline at Blackstone Records, I ensure the final product is not only radio-ready but also stays true to the artist's heart.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a '360° vision.' As a producer and Line Producer, I don't just look at the notes; I look at the big picture. I bring musicality through multi-instrumentalism (bass/guitars) and a professional 'expensive' sound that ensures the song can compete on any global streaming platform or radio station.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It starts with a deep dive into the artist's vision and references. Once we establish the creative direction, I build the production—from arrangements and session tracking to vocal production. I provide regular updates to ensure we're on the right track, followed by a professional mix. My goal is a seamless, stress-free experience from the first demo to the final master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My workflow is based at Blackstone Records, a professional environment equipped with high-end signal chains. I use Universal Audio Apollo interfaces, Neumann microphones, and API/Neve preamps. I work with a hybrid setup, combining the best analog hardware with a massive library of premium plugins (UAD, Waves, Soundtoys) and Focal monitoring for absolute precision.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am deeply inspired by producers who balance organic soul with modern precision, such as Chris Martin, Jon Bellion, and the production teams behind Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music. I admire professionals who can translate an artist's emotion into a powerful sonic landscape.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide full-scale music production and creative direction. Most of my clients come to me with a raw demo or just a vocal idea, and I transform it into a high-end, radio-ready record at Blackstone Records. I also specialize in professional session bass and guitar tracking, as well as hybrid mixing for Pop, Rock, and Worship projects.
