Interview with Ivan Krnic
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I'm most proud of involved recording bass for a modern pop track where the groove was the main driving element of the song. My role was to create a bassline that locked tightly with the drums and supported the entire arrangement. When the final mix came together, the bass became a key part of the song’s energy and feel, which was very rewarding.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I'm working on several remote recording projects for independent artists and producers, recording bass and guitar parts for pop, funk, R&B and rock productions. Most of my work focuses on creating tight grooves that support the song and fit perfectly with the drums.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m always happy to collaborate with other talented musicians and producers on the platform depending on the needs of the project.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their place, but for remote session work digital recording offers the speed, precision and reliability needed to deliver clean, mix-ready tracks.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver musical, groove-focused bass and guitar recordings that serve the song and sit perfectly in the mix.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy helping a song come to life by adding the right groove. When the bass and drums lock together and the track suddenly feels better, that’s the most satisfying part.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common question is how fast I can deliver. In most cases I deliver within 2–3 days, and often sooner depending on the project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think session musicians just record notes that are already written. In reality, a big part of the job is creating musical parts that support the song and improve the groove.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask for the full track or demo, the tempo, key and a reference of the groove or style they’re aiming for. This helps me record bass or guitar parts that fit the song perfectly.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Send a clear reference of the sound or groove you’re looking for and share the full track or demo if possible. The more context a session musician has, the better the final performance will fit your song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A bass guitar, an electric guitar, an audio interface, a laptop with a DAW and a good pair of headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been recording bass and guitar professionally for several years and have worked on more than 6000 remote recording projects for artists and producers around the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Groove-focused, musical and supportive of the song. My goal is always to create bass and guitar parts that feel natural, tight with the drums and enhance the overall energy of the track.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like Bruno Mars or Anderson Paak because their music is very groove-driven and rhythm focused, which is exactly the kind of production where bass and guitar can really elevate the track.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always build the groove around the relationship between the kick drum and the bass. When those two elements are locked together, the entire track feels stronger and more musical.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on groove-driven music such as funk, pop, disco, R&B and modern rock. My focus is always on creating bass and guitar parts that support the song and lock tightly with the drums.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creating tight, musical basslines and guitar parts that sit perfectly in the mix and support the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My main focus is groove and overall feel. I aim to add bass and guitar parts that support the song, lock tightly with the drums and enhance the overall production without overcrowding the arrangement.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Clients usually send their track or demo along with references. I record bass or guitar parts that fit the groove and arrangement of the song and deliver clean WAV stems ready for mixing. Revisions are always welcome if adjustments are needed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record from a professional home studio using an RME Babyface Pro FS interface and high-quality instruments including Sadowsky, Music Man and Fender basses and guitars. My setup is optimized for clean, mix-ready recordings delivered as high-quality WAV stems.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by groove-driven artists and producers such as Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Bruno Mars, Vulfpeck, Anderson Paak and modern pop producers who focus on rhythm and feel. I’m also heavily influenced by classic funk and disco stuff.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record groove-focused bass and guitar tracks for producers and artists working in pop, funk, disco, R&B, rock etc. Most of my work involves creating tight basslines or guitar parts that lock perfectly with the drums and elevate the production of the song.
