Interview with Remi Blaze

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am particularly proud of my track "True Emotion," which was handpicked for the prestigious Toolroom Records compilation, Leaders of the New School 2022. Being part of this project was incredibly special, as it showcased graduates from the Toolroom Academy and placed my music alongside some of the most exciting rising talents in the #ToolroomFamily. As the sole producer of the track, I was responsible for the full production and the final mixdown. "True Emotion" received incredible industry support, including being featured on Toolroom Radio and receiving plays from mega-talents like Leftwing : Kody. To have my work recognized by such a legendary label and a supportive community of world-class artists remains a highlight of my career and a testament to the "no-compromise" standards I bring to every project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently in the studio finishing a high-energy Tech House mover titled "Come Easy." This track embodies the core of the Remi Blaze sound: a deep, pumping bassline locked into a relentless groove, paired with sexy, atmospheric vocals that give the record its distinct attitude. I’m focusing heavily on the "vibe and identity" of the vocal processing to ensure it’s ready for the peak-time club environment.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I am always happy to recommend fellow professionals whose work meets the "no-compromise" standards I strive for in my own productions. While I handle the full production, mixing, and mastering for most of my clients, I believe in the power of specialized collaboration. If a project requires a specific live instrumentalist or a session vocalist that falls outside of my current roster, I am happy to point my clients toward verified SoundBetter providers who specialize in those areas. My goal is always the "peak-time brilliance" of the final record, and I will always advocate for whatever resources are necessary to get the track to a #1 charting standard.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I am a firm believer in a hybrid approach because both worlds offer distinct advantages for modern Tech House. I rely on analog hardware like the Moog Sub 37 and Roland TR-8S to provide the "organic weight," harmonic saturation, and unpredictable grit that defines a powerful low-end. However, I embrace the digital world for its surgical precision, total recall, and the innovative possibilities offered by tools like Acustica Audio and my own proprietary DSP plugins. In today’s industry, you need the soul of analog to move the dancefloor, but you need the clinical clarity of digital to meet the loudness and frequency standards of top-tier labels like Toolroom or Defected.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise a "Peak-Time Result." Whether we are finishing a soulful house track or a hard-driving tech house banger, I promise to deliver a mix that is "bursting with energy and attitude." If I wouldn't play it in my own headline set, it’s not finished.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most is the "breakthrough moment" in a project—the point where a raw vocal hook and a basic bassline suddenly lock together and transform into a high-energy club record. There is a unique satisfaction in applying the technical mentorship I received while studying at Point Blank and the Toolroom Academy to a client's vision and seeing that track reach its full potential. Being a part of an artist's journey, from helping them finish a difficult arrangement to hearing the final master translate perfectly on a massive system, is what drives my passion for production. I truly enjoy the collaborative process of taking a "bedroom demo" and elevating it to a level that can compete on the Beatport Main Stage and Charts while maintaining the artist's unique identity.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The most common question I receive is, "Can you make my track sound like my favorite artist or label?" My answer is always that while we can absolutely achieve the same professional weight, punch, and "incandescent" vocal clarity as a top-charting artist, my goal is to give your track its own unique competitive edge while embracing and heightening your signature sound and artist identity. I explain that by using a mix of industry-standard tools and my own proprietary effects plugins, we can capture that "pro" energy while ensuring the track stands out to A&Rs rather than just blending in. I also frequently get asked about turnaround times, to which I provide a transparent 3-to-5-day window to ensure every revision meets my "no-compromise" standard, depending on project schedules.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that a "great master" can fix a poor mix or a weak arrangement. In high-energy Tech House, the energy comes from the relationship between the oscillators and the groove, not just a limiter at the end of the chain. Many believe that "loudness" is the only goal, but true "peak-time brilliance" comes from dynamic range, phase alignment in the low-end, and the surgical cleaning of frequencies so the vocal has room to breathe. I see my role not just as a technician who "makes things loud," but as a sonic architect who ensures every element of the track is working toward a maximum impact on a professional club system.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: To ensure the best result, I always start by asking about the intended goal for the track—whether it’s a self-release for Spotify, a demo to send to a specific label like Toolroom or Defected, or a club weapon for your own DJ sets. I also ask for two or three reference tracks that represent the "vibe and attitude" you are aiming for, as this helps me align the low-end and vocal processing with your vision. Finally, I ask about the state of the project: Are we starting from a rough sketch, or are we polishing a near-finished arrangement? Understanding your creative "must-haves" versus where you want me to take the lead allows us to build a track that truly reflects your artistic identity.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When looking for a producer or engineer, my best advice is to hire someone who is currently active in the scene and understands the specific sonic requirements of today’s labels. You want a collaborator who doesn't just "process audio," but one who understands the "vibe and attitude" that makes a track stand out to an A&R. Always listen to their latest work to ensure their low-end and vocal processing meet the standards of the platforms you are targeting, such as Beatport or Spotify. Finally, look for a provider who offers clear communication and a transparent revision process; a great record is a partnership, and you want someone who is as dedicated to the "peak-time brilliance" of your track as you are—an approach I consistently take when working with other artists as a collaborator, remixer, and mentor.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were restricted to only five pieces of gear, my priority would be maintaining the perfect balance of analog character and digital precision. First would be my MacBook Pro running Ableton Live, which is the heart of my creative workflow. Second is the Moog Sub 37, as its distinctive oscillators are essential for the heavy, driving basslines my sound is known for. Third would be my Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones to ensure every mix decision is made with surgical accuracy. Fourth, I would take a high-end Universal Audio interface to access the rich, analog-modeled processing I rely on for my vocal chains. Finally, I would include a copy of Soothe 2, which is an absolute necessity for maintaining the "incandescent" and clean top-end clarity required for modern club systems.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career in music production has been defined by a deep commitment to technical excellence and a decade of high-level education. I refined my craft through intensive studies at Point Blank Music School and the Toolroom Academy, as well as specialized training at the Off Center DJ School in Toronto. My technical foundation was further solidified through direct mentorship with industry icons like D. Ramirez and Liz Cirelli, which instilled in me a "no-compromise" approach to engineering and sound design. This path led to significant commercial success, including my #1 hit "Right Now" on the Beatport Main Stage and a consistent string of charting releases. Beyond my solo work, I am a prolific collaborator and remixer, having worked alongside artists such as Malle, T3KAS, and Crazy Fluke, while being regularly invited by international labels to provide my signature high-energy Tech House flip to their top releases.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I describe my style as "Sensual, Incandescent, and Powerfully Driven." It is a sound rooted in the center of the dancefloor—characterized by heavy, dancefloor-oriented basslines and a distinct focus on catchy, well-processed vocals that provide both vibe and attitude. I aim for a "peak-time brilliance" that feels as good on a home stereo as it does on a massive festival system. By blending the organic weight of analog gear like the Moog Sub 37 with the surgical precision of modern digital tools and my own proprietary effects, I create a signature sound that sits right between the high-energy grit of James Hype and the polished groove of Mark Knight.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love the opportunity to collaborate with Chris Lake. His approach to minimalism and his legendary ability to make a single, perfectly engineered bassline drive an entire track is something I deeply admire and strive for in my own productions. I’ve always been fascinated by how he balances a clean, punchy aesthetic with such immense club power. Combining my focus on "dreamy" vocal processing and custom-built effects with his mastery of low-end architecture would, in my opinion, create the ultimate peak-time weapon.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Process your vocals like an instrument. In Tech House, a vocal shouldn't just be a dry performance. I often use rhythmic gates, creative delays, and parallel saturation to make the vocal "dance" with the percussion.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I am primarily recognized for my work in the Tech House and House music scenes, with a specific focus on peak-time tracks designed for the club environment. My catalog and client work frequently lean into high-energy grooves, rolling basslines, and "jackin" rhythms that stay in constant rotation on the dancefloor. While Tech House is my core specialty, I also have extensive experience producing and mixing Funky House and soulful, vocal-driven House tracks. Regardless of the sub-genre, my goal is always to deliver that "incandescent" sonic energy and polished, commercial clarity that top-tier labels like Toolroom Trax and Beachside Records demand.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: The "Vocal-Bass" Synergy. While I’m recognized for my catchy basslines, my real specialty is how I integrate vocals into a high-energy Tech House framework. I’m known for "dreamy" yet "punchy" vocal processing—using custom-crafted vocal effects, rhythmic chopping, and atmospheric layering to ensure the vocal isn't just "on top" of the track, but driving it.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Pure Sonic Energy and Identity. I bring the "vibe and attitude" that gets a track signed. Beyond the technical mix, I focus on the catchy elements: a signature bassline designed for "demanding dancers" and a standout vocal hook with professional, club-ready effects. Whether we are finishing a track or starting from a sketch, I ensure it has that "incandescent" peak-time brilliance.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I approach every project with a "dancefloor-first" mindset to ensure the final result translates perfectly from the studio to a major club system. My process begins by locking in the fundamental relationship between the kick and the bassline, as this foundation is what drives a peak-time record. Once the groove is established, I shift my focus to the vocal identity, utilizing custom-crafted effects and rhythmic chops to give the track a unique soul and a standout "cool" factor. To achieve a truly signature sound, I often integrate custom-built VST plugins and DSP tools I have developed myself, allowing me to manipulate saturation and spatial effects in ways that standard commercial software cannot. This bespoke technical approach is followed by a rigorous mixing and mastering phase where I benchmark the track against my own Beatport #1 and top-charting releases to guarantee it meets the highest commercial standards before delivery.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a precision-tuned environment designed specifically for club-standard translation and high-energy production. I monitor on the industry-standard KRK Rokit series to ensure my mixes have that signature dancefloor punch, and I cross-reference every detail on Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones for surgical accuracy. For that essential analog grit and weight, I rely on the Moog Sub 37 for my basslines and the Roland TR-8S for hardware drum character. My digital workflow is centered in Ableton Live, where I utilize advanced oscillator sound design alongside an extensive professional processing suite featuring high-end tools from Universal Audio, Waves, and SoundToys. I also incorporate Acustica Audio's specialized sampling technology to bring a unique analog depth to my mixes. Additionally, I utilize a suite of proprietary effects plugins I've developed under my own brand to craft signature vocal textures and creative transitions that ensure every track stands out with its own distinct sonic identity.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My sound is heavily shaped by the titans of modern Tech House who balance raw club energy with sophisticated groove. Mark Knight and the entire Toolroom philosophy of "functional yet musical" tracks are a massive inspiration. I also look to Chris Lake and Fisher for their peerless low-end engineering and ability to make a minimal groove feel massive. On the more melodic and "dreamy" side of House, I’m inspired by the vocal clarity and atmosphere found in Solotoko releases and the rhythmic precision of artists like James Hype and Wade.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in high-energy Tech House and House music. My most frequent projects involve finishing tracks for artists who have a great idea but need that "peak-time brilliance" to cross the finish line. Whether it’s starting a track from scratch, providing a "club-ready" mix, or mastering for the big system, my goal is to ensure your music is designed for constant rotation.
