James Marchese on SoundBetter

Professional freelance clarinettist - remote recording for TV, Film, Radio and Video Games from home studio in a quiet spot in the middle of the New Forest.

"James is not only a superb musician, who plays with a beautifully expressive tone, but also a great collaborator. He delivered some wonderful clarinet and bass clarinet parts for one of my BBC projects, and was supremely flexible and accommodating when I requested a few revisions. He’s quick to respond, and his recording setup is first-class. Highly recommended!"
Jon Nicholls | Composer & Sound Designer

I've recorded at BBC Maida Vale, Abbey Road, Metropolis Studios in London, and for the BBC.

Pricing is competitive (based on UK Musician's Union rates), and a consultation call is offered before commencing any project. Projects can be single or multi-track, and the final file(s) can be mixed and/or un-mixed. Tracks can be raw and/or mastered as required. I view every project as a bespoke piece of work, and collaborate with each client on their feedback to create a top-tier finished product.

Interview with James Marchese

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I stand out for my versatility of style, the quality of my sound and the musicality I bring to each track.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: Every piece of work I take on involves a discussion with the composer/sound engineer as required. If revisions are needed I can complete those very quickly after discussion.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I grew up listening to all sorts of music. Classically I was inspired by Andrew Marriner's sound from an early age, as well as listening to endless jazz recordings of Eddie Daniels. His first album Breakthrough got me hooked on the clarinet.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Most of my work is for the BBC and video games so I am used to turning recordings around fast as deadlines are always tight.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It's a real privilege to play music that has never been played before.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: A video game soundtrack!

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: A top-tier finished product worthy of an Abbey Road recording,

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I work on everything from classical, to jazz, to soundtracks to video games.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I record from my (acoustically treated) home studio in the middle of the New Forest in the UK. It's super quiet 24 hours a day.
