Game changing vocal production, harmonies, layering and effects to set your song apart. Having produced hundreds of songs over the course of 20 years, I can help elevate your high-quality songs into to something that really cuts through the noise, as well as help your at-home hobbyist recordings to sound professional grade.

ABOUT ME:
Hello!! I'm a producer of twenty years who specializes in using vocal production with layering, harmonies, and effects to really create dynamics and let the beauty of a song shine through. In any genre where there is singing, the vocals take the listener on a journey, and my speciality is making that journey as engaging as possible. My speciality genres are pop-rock, neo-soul, and loud rock.

Beyond vocal production, I also am very experienced with creating full arrangements for songs, focusing on using guitars, synths, pianos and effects to create a solid sense of push-and-pull within a song. Whether it is creating an entire instrumental from scratch or augmenting an instrumental with subtle melodic lines to create more dynamics, I have a deep understanding of what creates movement in a song and how to help it shine.

I can work in any genre! Tell me about your artistry and let's figure out how I can help you.

I have worked with Nathan on 30+ songs, over the past 5 years.

He is a wildly talented producer, and a fantastic musician. I appreciate Nathan’s ability to communicate and collaborate. As well, his ability (technical and artistic) to see the full potential in a song, and to take that song from demo to release-ready, never ceases to amaze me.

In short, Nathan is an absolute master at his craft - a professional through and through. If you’re looking for a producer, I can’t recommend him enough.

I’ve worked with Nathan on countless songs from indie, to neo soul, rap and rock. He knows how to put together a beautiful song. The way he can naturally melodine vocals is a specific snd technical skill that can’t be copied through slapping auto tune on. He knows his chords, his vocal melody lines and can come up with vocals for you on the spot.
But most of all he cares about the stories behind the music and how it can reach people. If you need someone in your corner that also has immaculate mixing and mastering skills look no further :)

Nathan should be (and honestly probably is) your musicians favorite musician, as well as your musicians favorite producer. Out of all the producers I’ve worked with, Nathan is by far the smartest, most talented, reputable guy there is out there. From his background in creating music, to having perfect pitch, Nathan knows exactly what your track needs to elevate the listening experience and makes the recording process incredibly easy and even fun. I honestly have so much more kudos to give Nathan but Soundbetter is cutting me off :( but PLEASE HIRE NATHAN. I PROMISE YOU WONT REGRET IT.

Interview with Nathan Johnson

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Most frequently I work on guitar-centric pop, whether that means Neo-Soul, Pop-Rock, Indie Pop, or Hard Rock.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: One of my strongest skills is my sense of how to cultivate push-and-pull within a song, writing melodic hooks, as well as understanding the overall essence of a song and how to emphasize its strongest qualities. Where I used to feel hindered by not having a specific genre I specialize in, what I've found is that my diverse taste and multi-genre background has been one of my strongest assets in approaching production.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: The process is different depending on if the artist is looking for vocal production or for entire instrumental production as well. In case of full production, singer/songwriters generally send me demos (guitar and voice, piano and voice, etc) of their song and I will either develop the arrangement with guiding feedback from the artist until there is a full instrumental production. Whether they have a very specific idea of the sound they're looking for, or just a vague open-minded notion, we consult reference tracks and discuss stylistic inspirations before starting to flesh things out. When the instrumental is finished, we will approach vocal production. When working with artists in studio, I write harmonies on the fly as they perform their track I offer hands-on guidance on what and how to execute various vocal harmonies and layers. When working remote, I will demo out the harmonies that I envision in the song, and send them as examples for the artist to duplicate.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Illangelo (The Weeknd, Post Malone) as well as Doc McKinney (The Weeknd, Esthero) are a primary source of inspiration in how to approach vocals: his work on The Weeknd's original mixtapes as well as later work serve as a blueprint on how to let the voice, harmonies, layers and effects elevate production to another level. I've found lots of additional inspiration for production in the work of Massive Attack, Deftones, D'Angelo, Fountains of Wayne and more.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: Most frequently the artists I work with are vocalists: I help the vocal arrangement by writing harmonies to augment their performance with dynamics, help coach them through various aspects of the performance, discern where and what kind of vocal effects to use, and mix them to taste. In my perspective, the voice is at center stage of any song, and the goal of vocal production is to have all the scenery, lights, props and backdrops working in tandem to give the BEST stage for the star of the show to shine through.
