Interview with Amiel

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Keyboard Midi Keyboard Headphones A Mic A Laptop

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: Continuing to create music for traditional songwriter and sound tracks. In terms of studying music, over a decade. In terms of creating music, over half a decade.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Thundercat. His compositions, mixing, scales, progressions and instrument/synth selection is magical. I'd be just as happy shadowing him as much as collaborating.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: It can be clear when something doesn't sound "right" and needs to be fixed, but inversely there are hundreds of examples of that "wrongful" sound choice giving a track it's uniqueness. Sometimes you don't have to overthink what you hear.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Soul, R&B, Classical Film Scores, and Acoustic.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My research. Thankfully with music theory, there is a formula for most if not all music structure for every genre and sub-genres. Studying what makes one different than the rest helps me narrow the path closer to my clients desired piece of music.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: As much fun as I have creating music, I carry little to know personal entitlement to my clients work to further assure them and myself that this is their baby at the end of the day. I bring that selfless attitude with every draft to keep me from assuming more executive decision-making power than initially agreed upon.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: After having an in-depth conversation with my client, I'll be begin studying/refreshing on the theoretical elements of the desired musical genre, making sure I understand the rules I'd be staying within or even breaking. During this stage, I listening to the albums, songs, or any other media I've asked the client to share to capture the direction of their desired final work. When enough research and notes have been taken, I take it to the keyboard to find a chord progression; I may hum a melody here. Once I've notated the work (either for my client or solely for myself), I play with writing the lyrics. Once the composition is set and the lyrics have been solidified for, I may record a rough reference on Logic Pro X. That draft is then sent to my client for review.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: A BCP Piano keyboard, Nektar Impact LX 49+ midi keyboard, and Logic Pro X on my MacBook Air.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Terrance Martin. Stevie Wonder.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: The most common type of work is writing lyrics and composing songs based on the clients specific requests.
