Interview with Ikemba Ochie

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog! Something about writing the lyrics down from pen to paper is just magical to me, and also helps me to remember the lyrics better. But,on this platform ofcourse everthing will be converted to digital.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I take pride in what I do, and every song is like my baby, so I promise you will always get my best.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Do you have a beat, if so send it. What do you want to say in this song? List it out plainly so I can get a vibe for what the mood should be.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My songs/poems are typically melancholic yet hopeful.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I want to work with Kaytranada. I love how he's created his own lane with dance music by mixing it in with r&b/soul and funk influences. When a Kaytranada beat comes on, I know it's him just by the signature sound. I would love to write to one of his beats.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Pop and dance are what I gravitate towards. But I can do it all, really.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I have a good ear for what sounds good and how to keep the song interesting and the listener engaged.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I always strive to write a song that makes people feel something. Happy, euphoric, validated, understood, seen etc... I always want to use music as a means of connection.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I hear the beat and create a melody that marries it best, and the lyrics fill themselves in. Or I'll have an idea, a concept, or bare bones for a song and will write around it.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have a piano that I use to write songs.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I'm very inspired by avant-garde and poetic lyricism like Frank Ocean, Solange Knowles, Willow Smith, Florence And The Machine, Nao, Orion Sun as well as more pop acts like Charlie XCX, Chappel Roan, and Billie Eilish.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I am a songwriter. I assist artists in telling their stories.
