Interview with David Potvin - Dome Studio
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I am especially proud of is producing and recording the vocals for Manon Hollander's "Marie Douceur, Marie Colère", which was featured in the big Paris chase scene of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023 blockbuster OST). Working on a Hollywood production from my studio near Angers, France, was a huge highlight after 20+ years in the industry, it shows how indie-level work can reach global scale. My role was vocals production and recording at Dome Studio, capturing the performance to fit the intense, high-stakes scene perfectly.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working on remixes in electro-dubstep style of older Rock and Metal tracks.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: For the moment, I don’t know anyone personally on SoundBetter that I would specifically recommend to my clients. I haven’t had the time yet to explore the platform deeply and connect with other pros there. My focus has been on my own projects and clients, but I’m always open to discovering great talent on SoundBetter in the future.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I use both analog and digital — they each have strengths that I love. I really enjoy analog outboard gear, especially tube-based equipment, for its sound and warmth (the natural saturation, harmonics, and character it adds). At the same time, I love the digital side with Pro Tools for its flexibility: it allows me to easily revisit and rework mixes whenever bands request changes, revisions, or updates — which happens often and is essential for client satisfaction. Combining both gives the best of both worlds: analog warmth and vibe during tracking and processing, plus digital precision, recallability, and unlimited revisions in the DAW.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that you will improve after working in the studio — your songs, your sound, and your overall project will evolve and get stronger thanks to the collaborative process, guidance, and production work we do together.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is seeing a song evolve and become a truly great track — watching it go from raw ideas or demos to something powerful, impactful, and memorable that sticks with listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Do you know a distributor and a vinyl pressing plant?" My answer: Yes, I work with a very good distributor who also has great deals/options for vinyl pressing. If needed, I’m happy to put you in touch with them to help with your physical release project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that some people think I only work on Metal. While my roots and a large part of my experience are in Metal (as a musician in bands like Lyzanxia, One-Way Mirror, Bad Rescue, and through many Metal productions), I adapt to almost any style — Rock, Hardcore, Hip-Hop, Electro, Pop, soundtracks, or whatever the project calls for. For me, the genre matters very little; what really counts is creating songs that stick in people's heads and have real impact.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: "What career do you want to build with your band, and do you want me to help you on that aspect?" This helps me understand their long-term vision right from the start, whether they're focused purely on production/mixing, or if they also need guidance on direction, sound identity, releases, or career steps.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come prepared with your project vision clear. The more specific you are about your goals, references (1 or 2 tracks that capture the sound/vibe you're after), and what you want to achieve (e.g., streaming-ready, radio impact, massive power), the better I can serve your identity from the start. For mixing projects, provide raw tracks that are as mix-ready as possible (edited if you can) to keep the focus on creative sculpting rather than prep work. For full productions (recording + mixing + mastering), bring demos or ideas so we can shape things together early in pre-production. Expect a fully collaborative process: I'm very attentive to your requests, even demanding ones, and I give professional advice without ever imposing my vision. I respect your project's personality while bringing my experience (as a musician and producer) to enhance the color, energy, and impact you want. Unlimited revisions until you're 100% satisfied are standard, so don't hesitate to communicate openly throughout.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, an acoustic bass, drumsticks, a knife and a harpoon to be able to fish, hunt and defend myself, haha!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path started as a musician: I am a founding member and guitarist/vocalist in several French Rock/Metal bands, including Lyzanxia, One-Way Mirror, Phaze I, and Bad Rescue. Since 2005, I have also been a producer, recording, mixing, and mastering engineer at Dome Studio, which I established near Angers, France. The studio specializes in Rock and Metal genres but is open to all styles since 2007. Over the years, I have produced over a thousand tracks (on approximately twenty albums for my own projects and many more for other artists), co-founded Trepan Records (a label focused on music publishing and production), and collaborated on various labels and projects, including video clips broadcast on channels like MCM, M6, and MTV. I have been doing this for over 25 years (more than 20 years of experience in music as a musician and producer).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is characterized by modern and massive productions, maintaining consistent sonic power throughout. While my foundation is in metal, I can adapt to nearly any style as long as the objective is to create something modern and powerful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: A dream collaboration would be with veteran bands like Metallica, who have decades of experience and massive legacy in heavy music. Other genius artists like Mike Patton or Devin Townsend would also be incredible to work with. Their visionary approach to songwriting and production often goes beyond what most can imagine, and I’d love to truly understand how they push their ideas all the way to the finish line and bring such unique, boundary-pushing visions to life.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One key music production tip I always follow: Use your ears before using expensive gear. Listen critically first, ctrust your hearing to guide decisions on tone, balance, dynamics, and overall feel, before reaching for plugins, EQ, compression, or other tools. The best gear in the world won't fix what your ears already tell you isn't working. This approach ensures the production stays authentic to the song's vision and avoids over-processing
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Metal, Rock variants, and Hardcore, while also handling Hip-Hop, Electro, soundtracks, and more.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is knowing exactly how to uncover the full potential of each song, transform every track into one that truly grabs attention and attracts fans, and make songs sound absolutely killer — powerful, crisp, massive, and super impactful. Clients frequently highlight this expertise as what sets me apart: my ability to sculpt the sound collaboratively while fully respecting the project's personality, providing professional-level advice without ever imposing my own vision, and delivering a truly unique, powerful result. This is often described as having a distinct 'Metal touch' even in other genres, with reviews noting how the production makes tracks 'stand out from the crowd', 'elevate your songs', 'sound very current and timeless', deliver a 'massive sound', a 'sound that rocks!', or become 'the perfect calling card to find labels and gigs'.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring powerful, modern, world-class sounds that serve the song, delivering consistent massive sonic power from start to finish. As well as collaborative sculpting in mixing to transform raw songs into impactful art while matching and enhancing the band's identity and sound. An external perspective to optimize the efficiency of the track: sometimes going straight to the point for direct impact, sometimes adding parts or sections to increase immersion and depth, depending on the atmosphere the song needs. With over 25 years of experience (as a musician in bands like Lyzanxia and One-Way Mirror) and more than 1,000 tracks recorded, mixed & mastered, I provide authentic, fan-attracting results. Clients often highlight my ear for detail, pro advice without imposing, respect for the project's personality, and ability to bring out the best in every band for powerful and truly unique songs.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process depends on the project, but I love handling the full chain (recording + mixing + mastering) whenever possible for maximum sonic consistency and power. When working on a full production: I start by receiving the band's demos to get a clear vision of what the final tracks could become. We then collaborate closely with the group in the studio, preserving as much of their original sound and identity as possible while optimizing compositions, arrangements, and performances. By focusing on these foundational elements during recording and pre-production, the mixing and mastering stages flow very smoothly and naturally deliver massive, modern results. For pure mixing projects: I request raw tracks (stems or multitracks), and if possible, already edited ones—if not, I handle the editing myself to ensure the strongest possible impact and solidity. I always ask for one or two reference tracks so I understand exactly the direction the band wants to go (e.g., sound, vibe, loudness). Depending on the band's goals, I propose "radio ready" versions that might be shorter, include additional arrangements, or be optimized specifically for streaming/radio play. Throughout, the process is collaborative: I sculpt the sound to match the artist's identity while delivering unlimited revisions until 100% satisfaction.

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m particularly inspired by the work of Scandinavian producers like Fredrik Nordström, Tue Madsen, and Jens Bogren, as well as German producer Christian Kohle. Their ability to deliver massive, modern, and powerful metal productions has always been a reference for me. Awesome producers like Andy Sneap and David Bendeth are also major influences in my approach to heavy, precise, and impactful mixing. On the musician side, I admire what Bring Me The Horizon has achieved in terms of production on their recent albums. The innovative blend of heaviness, electronics, and clarity is impressive. While I remain deeply attached to pioneering bands like Meshuggah for their groundbreaking technical and sonic approach, modern bands like Predisent also inspire me with their fresh take on heavy music and high-level production values.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is accompanying bands and artists to improve and elevate their sound throughout the entire production chain, with a strong focus on recording (precise capture during tracking sessions) and mixing. I help shape the sound to perfectly match their style and musical identity, often referencing similar bands or their own reference tracks. This includes detailed guidance during vocal/instrument recording to achieve powerful, modern, and massive results, followed by collaborative mixing where I sculpt the tracks to enhance clarity, impact, and authenticity—especially in Rock, Metal, and Hardcore, but adaptable to other genres like Hip-Hop, Electro, or soundtracks. Many clients choose the full chain (recording + mixing + mastering) for sonic consistency from start to finish.
