Interview with Knomo.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the producer of "Project Z." It was my very first attempt at becoming an artist, although it failed, it was a considerable learning experience.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Fusing Color Bass & Tearout! As well as creating a unique style very much influenced by Virtual Riot & Snail's House.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: It's not an A or B question, both can be useful in their own regard. However, I typically look for practical things (which means very time efficient & with high quality) and tend to do everything in the Digital realm.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I try to teach you the offered services and especially sound design to the best of my abilities! You will come out the other end much smarter than before.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The sheer endless amount of sounds, no matter what I do. With so many tools, so many plugins, so many processing choices it's almost impossible to run out of sounds.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: A question I get a lot is: Q: "How do you handle pay?" A: Except for the prices on the front page, all sound design services are handled individually, in an open conversation. I don't wanna waste time, neither mine nor yours! So it needs to be fair for everyone. (: Q: "What's your go to production advice?" A: Follow your curiosity! If you're interested in how or why something works the way it does, do not shy away from experimenting, reading up on it or asking others for their opinion.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: People say my sound is a lot like Virtual Riot's (which is true) but I do try to develop my own way of doing things & my own sound. It's not wrong to look up to other people, but eventually you have to take the leap.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What DAW do you use? What prior experience do you have? What is your go-to sound, your routine & your interests concerning music production?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be open & honest, I try to do the same!

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Haha, easy. Long living battery, my M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini & many cables in case things break. Oh and for the 2 other "gear" pieces my best friends & enough food and water.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been doing this for over 10 years now. I did need to take time off to focus on real-life problems, but always stayed interested in music & music production. Now I'm back at it again!

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Energetic, hectic (very much ADHD) production of genres but with new & creative sound design.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I'd love to work with some of my biggest inspirations one day, but who knows, haha. I just want to meet many new people and make fond memories.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Many roads lead to Rome, but if you're good at Sound Designing you're guaranteed to more or less lock-in to a certain sound that is "your own style" Even if you're stuck with Arrangement, Sound Selection, Musicality or Mixing & Mastering. Just from the process of creating sounds alone you get an infinite array of possibility, so you can NOT get stuck!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Dubstep, Color Bass, Tearout & DnB

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Definitely Sound Design. I can make lots of very different sounds, that each pertain to a particular taste or genre. Of course, I develop my own kind of sounds, too!

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Production Experience in terms of arrangement, sound selection, sound design & the final mix & master.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Depends very much on the task I'm giving/the work that is offered. However, I typically try to get to it as soon as possible.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a Focusrite 2i2, 4th Gen & 2 KRK Rokkit 5G5's as my primary sound system.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Big inspirations have always been people like Virtual Riot, Snail's House, Chime, Skybreak & Fox Stevenson.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mostly sound design drums, basses, synths (like plucks, leads, others) & fx for all kinds of producers looking to make new & exciting Dubstep.
