Interview with MixKD

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m particularly proud of is my personal music project under the name MKD, where I handled the entire process, from composition to mixing and mastering. This project allowed me to develop a strong sonic identity and refine my approach to mixing and mastering, focusing on clarity, impact, and artistic coherence. I’m proud of it because it fully reflects my musical vision and my level of standards.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: I’d bring my iMac (with Ableton, of course), a keyboard and mouse, a pair of speakers, and a generator to keep everything running hahahhh

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I work in an optimized studio environment for mixing and mastering, with a reliable setup and a calibrated listening chain. My focus is on accuracy, translation across different playback systems, and the quality of the final result rather than on the amount of gear.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: What I enjoy most is elevating my clients’ tracks, bringing their music to life and making sure they are fully satisfied with the final result.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: The most common questions usually relate to delivery time, the number of included revisions, and how I ensure the artist’s vision is respected. I explain my process, timelines, and the importance of clear communication to achieve the best possible result.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I usually ask about the desired artistic direction, sonic references, project goals, and the type of result expected. I also discuss communication preferences and deadlines to ensure a smooth collaboration.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I would describe my style as clean, precise, and impactful, with a strong focus on balance, dynamics, and respecting the artist’s vision.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I have been working with music and audio for several years, with 11 years of experience in composition and 7 years in mixing and mastering. I am now offering my services to artists with a professional and collaborative approach.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My main strength is my ability to take the time to understand and respect each project’s artistic vision, while bringing clarity, power, and balance to the mix and mastering.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: If I could work with only one artist, it would be The Caracal Project. He is, in my opinion, one of the most creative artists today, with a unique style of his own, seamlessly blending drum & bass, pop, and rock with 8-bit-inspired textures.

  21. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  22. A: What I can promise is that I will always strive to get as close as possible to what they have in mind for their music, both in mixing and mastering.

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: My advice is to choose someone who takes the time to understand your vision. It’s better to prioritize quality and attention to detail over a fast turnaround that compromises the final result. Clear communication and a trust-based collaboration are essential to serve the music.

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: I mainly work digitally, in line with current music standards, even though analog gear can add character and texture.

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: Some people consider mixing and mastering to be expensive for what it is, but achieving a professional result requires years of experience, critical listening, and practice.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Theory—whether in music production or mixing/mastering—is important. However, it’s equally important to move beyond theory, explore new ideas, and trust your instincts, as there is no single way to approach a mix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I am mainly specialized in bass music (drum’n bass, mid-tempo, bass house), while occasionally expanding into house music.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring power and clarity to music so it can translate well across all playback systems, while adapting to and respecting the artist’s vision and creative direction.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I first analyze the track by listening to it two to three times, identifying priorities and the elements that immediately stand out.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: In bass music, my main influences include Rezz, Lex Digital, Malaa, and Deathpact. In drum’n bass, they include Dimension, Bou, Camo & Krooked, and The Caracal Project.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Most of the time, I deliver a full mix and mastering, focusing on achieving the best possible balance so the track is ready for distribution on streaming platforms.
