Interview with Noah Tillberg
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I just finished mixing a 6 song EP by a incredibly talented german up and coming artist. It was songs with a lot happening, up to 200 stems on each song and kind of a new genre for me as well so it certainly was a challenge. But it turned out great.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Just having ”chains” on everything, most of the mixing I believe comes from moving the track manually with the likes of automation and such. That’s where you really can make an impact emotionally and where the mixing really makes a difference. If clients just wanted chains for everything they could look it up on YouTube and they would be a ”mixing engineer” in a week.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to do everything I can to make your song the best it can be, with no compromises. I’m hungry and havent really established myself yet, so every project I take on becomes incredibly personal and important to me, which is something I don’t think you’ll get from many others. When you get the track back, it will always be the absolute best version I can make it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love seeing artists discover the full potential of their song. There’s nothing better than helping them bring out its emotion, energy, and details, and watching the track come alive in a way they maybe didn’t even imagine at first.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask if there’s a particular song that has inspired the track, and if so, which one. I also ask for a reference of how the song sounds before it’s mixed, so I can understand the starting point and the artist’s vision.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say it’s important to feel a connection with the person you're working with. When you find someone who gets your vision and brings something special to the table, that’s when the magic happens.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, headphones, hard drive and interface. Those 4 are enough.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working with music for 8 years. For the first 6 years, it was a hobby and a creative escape, until I realized it was what I wanted to pursue full-time. Over the past 2 years, I’ve focused on music 100%, completing a one-year formal program and currently gaining hands-on experience through an internship at a professional studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d say if you just want the loudest most cranked track with no dynamics, I’m not the right choice. I focus more on detail and emotion. I’d describe my sound as polished and sonically pleasing, but still as hard hitting as could be without destroying the emotion.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly Hip-Hop but also Rnb, Afrobeat, Trap and many more.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a clear sense of how a track should sound at its best and can hear what needs to be done to bring out as much emotion as possible. I also take a lot of pride in details, making sure every element feels right and intentional to my ear.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Simply put, I identify what isn’t working in a song and improve it, and I find what already works and make it even stronger. Using my ear and experience, my goal is always to help the song become the best version of itself.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process varies from song to song, but one thing that’s always consistent is referencing. I always compare the new mix to how the track sounded when I first received it, to make sure I preserve the original vibe. From there, my focus is on enhancing what’s already there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I primarily work from a home studio setup that lets me stay flexible. I use Yamaha monitors and Sony headphones, powered by a Focusrite interface. On top of that, I also have access to a top high-end studio in Copenhagen, which gives me the option to take projects into a more professional studio environment when needed.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mixingwise there are a lot, Leslie Braithwaite, Jaycen Joshua, Mike Dean, Dave Pensado and many more. Just overall artists I would say Drake is my biggest inspiration, especially production wise. Very simplistic but so impactful. When I’m looking for more complex sounds, I’m often drawn to Yeat and Travis Scott because of their creative approach to effects and sound design. I’m also inspired by Westside Gunn and that Griselda sound, which is something I’ve worked with a lot and feel comfortable with.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing, Mastering and co-Production work. Making a good song better.
