Interview with Amauri Thomas

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: About the Vision: What’s the overall vibe or emotion you want this track to have? Are there any reference songs you’d like me to match in terms of tone, loudness, or style? What’s the main focus of the song (vocals, drums, atmosphere, etc.)? About the Production: Was the track professionally recorded, or recorded at home? Are all stems clean, edited, and organized? Do you have any specific effects already printed that you want kept? About the Release Goals: Where will this be released (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.)? Is this a single, EP, or part of a larger project? Do you have a deadline? About Expectations: Have you worked with a mixing/mastering engineer before? How many revision rounds are you expecting? What’s your budget range?

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: If you’re an artist looking to hire a mixing and mastering engineer like me, here’s the advice I’d give you: First, look for someone who understands music from both a creative and technical perspective. Because I’ve been producing music and playing guitar for over seven years—and mixing and mastering for five—I don’t just focus on making a track “sound clean.” I focus on preserving and enhancing the emotion, arrangement, and intention behind your song. Second, review their previous work and make sure their sound aligns with your vision. A good engineer should be versatile but also consistent in quality. Ask yourself: Do their mixes feel balanced, powerful, and professional? Do the vocals sit right? Do the drums hit the way you want yours to? Third, communication matters. Choose someone who listens to your goals, references, and feedback. Mixing and mastering should feel collaborative, not transactional. Finally, invest in quality. A great mix can elevate your entire release, help you stand out, and ensure your music translates well across all platforms and systems.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: a Macbook, Native Instruments Komplete 1 Interface, Epiphone Les Paul Studio Edition, a Marshal JCM800 stack, and a Neumann U87.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: My career path started over seven years ago as a musician first. I began by playing guitar and producing my own music, which gave me a deep understanding of songwriting, arrangement, and how emotion translates through sound. As I developed my production skills, I naturally became more focused on the technical side, wanting my tracks to sound as powerful and polished as the records that inspired me. That’s what led me into mixing and mastering about five years ago.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: An artists I've been wanting to work with for a while is JPEGMAFIA due to hit unique perspective on music and production and the creative work ethic.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Take time to learn and understand the different frequency bands (low, low-mid, high-mid, etc.) so that you can properly balance the elements of your production.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I'm comfortable working for Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, RnB; Alt Pop, Alt Rock, Alt Hip-Hop, Alt RnB, Industrial & Metal.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skills are my mixing and mastering!

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I believe I bring a new hear to the equation and spot ideas and creative opprotunity that an artist may have overlooked or forgot!

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Home studio set-up with Adam Audio T7V studio monitor pair, Native Instruments Komplete Audio 1 Interface, a Neat King Bee Microphone, HP OMEN - 25L Desktop and a Symetrix Voice Processor hardware unit..

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22.
