Pop/rock, Prog, and Blues Session Guitarist/Bassist
I'm a guitarist and bassist specializing in tight pop/rock rhythms, ambient clean textures, and modern prog/math-rock riffs. For the past 6 years I've written, produced, and mixed instrumental music, developing a clean, rhythmic playing style that sits well in a mix.
Whether you need pocket-focused rhythm guitar, expressive leads, 7-8 string parts, or punchy low-end bass, I provide both DI and mix-ready processed tracks depending on your workflow.
What I Offer:
- Tight pop and rock rhythm guitar with accurate timing
- Ambient clean textures, swells, and layered soundscapes
- Prog/math-rock inspired riffs with colorful chords and modern techniques
- Blues/neo-soul inspired leads and chord embellishments
- Punchy, but controlled bass (Dingwall NG3) for pop, rock, and prog
- DI tracks and/or fully processed tones using Quad Cortex and Neural DSP plugins
- Programmed MIDI drums (GGD and Mixwave)
Let me know the vibe you're going for, and I'll help support your track!
Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.
Interview with Joshua Carmichael
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I just finished writing a prog instrumental, and am working on a blues/neo-soul track. Both are my personal projects
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I do not know anyone yet, but I hope that changes soon!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I have always loved analog gear. But since Neural DSP started making plugins and the quad cortex, I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in a full mix. The quad cortex has been my go-to for guitar and bass, and it just sounds fantastic. I will say, as a player it's hard to top playing through a loud tube amp though!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give your track a thorough listen and to
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I am new to remote session work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What genre would you classify this song? What tempo is it? Do you want the guitar part to be supportive or "front-and-center?" "What guitar tone/sound do you hear in your head?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Tell me the emotion(s) you want the listener to feel! Also the more information about the track you give me, the better I can help support it!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my Fender Strat, Quad Cortex, speakers, headphones, and my computer.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have a day job, but I have been producing instrumental prog for about 6 years. I started writing and recording music since I was in middle school.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My guitar playing is influenced by John Mayer's blues style, as well as Plini's thoughtful compositions.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with an artist who has a passion for writing compelling music. If I had to choose one, it would be Plini. To me he isn't just a great guitar player, he's a great composer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get the source as good as it can be! This includes your writing, playing, mic placement, and tone of your instrument or voice. This will make the end product better and you won't have to really "fix" anything in the mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Prog rock and Blues
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Refining the music I write. Almost always the idea I start out with is somewhat different in the final product. I love the process of seeing an idea through while still improving on it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring guitar and bass parts that support the emotion and texture of a track, but without overpowering it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will usually start with a guitar idea, usually a chord progression or riff. I try to think about the overall arc of the song, not just what could sound cool.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic Pro, Yamaha HS5 monitors, Steven Slate VSX, Quad Cortex, and a MacBook Pro.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by Plini's melody writing, Tosin Abasi's creative guitar playing, Jakub Zytechi's production, and John Mayer's blues playing and feel.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am new to SoundBetter, but I plan to give my clients quality, professional guitar and bass tracks that fit their song well.
