Interview with Joseph Thomas
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm proudest of the tracks where an artist sent me a rough, uncertain mix and got back something that finally sounded like the record in their head — run through real hardware, start to finish.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Producing and releasing my own music weekly, and taking on a small number of client mix/master slots each week.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. Software emulations get close, but real converters and a real console give a track a depth and cohesion I can't fake in the box.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I only take six projects a week, so yours gets my full, undivided attention — not a spot in an assembly line.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing the moment a mix locks in — when the low end, the imaging, and the vibe all click into place.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How quickly they'll get a first version to react to. My answer: most single-track jobs are delivered within 5 days, and I'll always give you an honest timeline up front.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's all done in software. It isn't — every track runs through a real console and a real converter chain, by hand.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a goal or sound in mind? Describe it to me, share a reference track — I need your vibe more than anything.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Get a clear agreement on revisions. It's all about taste, as I said — I include two free revisions, and beyond that we can scope additional passes so expectations are clear on both sides.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: macbook pro, virus Ti, roland tr-8s, SSL xlogic, eventide h90
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: DJing in the 90's rave scene > digital marketing > hobby music production > self release and sync licensing
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: artisanal
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with BT — his production work and philosophy have shaped my approach more than anyone's.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Rest your ears. The best mix decisions happen when you're not fatigued — come back the next day and you'll hear everything.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily electronic and singer-songwriter material, but I'm open to anything with a clear vision behind it.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Taste and restraint — knowing what to leave alone as much as what to change, in service of the production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My ears and my hardware chain. It comes down to taste — hearing what a track needs and delivering it with real analog gear.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: You reserve a slot and send stems, I run them through the console and converter chain by hand, and you get release-ready files back with two free revisions — plus photos and video of your track on the console.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: An analog mixing console with a premium converter chain (SSL Alpha 8 and Apogee Rosetta 800), plus several synths, electric and acoustic guitars, and a MacBook Pro M4 Pro.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired most by the production work and philosophy of BT — his attention to detail and sound design shape how I approach every track.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Lately I've had a lot of requests to enrich AI-generated songs with my analog gear — running them through the console and converter chain to give them warmth and cohesion. Alongside that, my core work is mixing and mastering for independent artists.
