Interview with Milly Thimaras
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I use Logic for all my projects. While there is 'a sound' to analog recordings, digital provides the precision, clean edits, and layered production needed for polished vocals, tight rhythms, and expansive arrangements. I have a number of ways to add analog warmth if required—through preamps and tape emulation etc, preventing it from feeling too sterile while retaining modern clarity.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to every client is simple: I only take on projects I know I can deliver at the highest standard, and I give everything I’ve got to ensure the final result exceeds expectations. I’m committed to collaborating closely and refining the work until you’re completely happy with it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is that it’s everything I’ve ever wanted to do. I’ve always loved singing and telling stories, and music has been my life—there’s never been a plan B. Getting to bring songs to life, share emotion, and connect with people through storytelling is why I do this every single day.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that it’s just performing or singing. In reality, the writing process is where I live—songwriting is a discipline I take very seriously. I use many different methods, and some songs take weeks to fully come together. Every track is an exploration.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When I speak with prospective clients, I focus on understanding their vision, goals, and style. I typically ask questions like: What’s the story or emotion you want the song to convey? Are there any references, influences, or examples you love? What’s the intended use or audience for the track? Do you have specific deadlines or milestones in mind? Are there any particular elements (vocals, keys, hooks, arrangements) you want me to focus on? These questions help me align with their vision, make sure I’m the right fit, and deliver a song that exceeds expectations.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to find someone who truly understands your vision and is committed to bringing it to life. Look for a provider who listens, communicates clearly, and will go the extra mile to make sure you’re happy with the final result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Electro-Voice RE20 mic – for pristine vocals anytime inspiration hits. AKG 214 mic – perfect for capturing everything from soft harmonies to powerhouse runs. Portable keyboard/synth – so I can create melodies, chords, and arrangements on the fly. High-quality headphones – to hear every detail and keep working anywhere. Audio interface – to connect it all and record my ideas instantly. That way, even on a desert island, I could write, sing, and produce songs—because music never stops, even in paradise (or isolation).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is emotionally-driven, melodic pop with a soulful edge. It blends storytelling and vulnerability with powerful hooks, rich harmonies, and modern production. I love combining classic influences like Fleetwood Mac and Michael Jackson with contemporary sounds inspired by HAIM, Gaga, and Christina Aguilera, creating songs that feel timeless yet fresh.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists who are fearless, emotive, and boundary-pushing. Collaborating with someone like Gaga, RAYE, or H.E.R. would be incredible because they combine powerful vocals with storytelling and innovation—the same qualities I aim to bring to my own music. I’m drawn to artists who challenge themselves and their listeners, and working with them would be an amazing opportunity to grow creatively and create something unforgettable.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I use reverb to create space and depth without pushing everything back in the mix. By carefully adjusting pre-delay and choosing the right type of reverb for each element, I can control the vibe and clarity. For example, a lead vocal might sit on a subtle plate reverb to keep it intimate, while backing vocals can benefit from a larger hall reverb to add width and richness without muddying the mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work primarily on emotionally-driven pop, soul, and rock-infused music, blending strong melodies, memorable hooks, and rich arrangements. I’m versatile, though, and can adapt to different genres and styles, tailoring my songwriting, vocals, and production to fit everything from a specific brief to a completely free-flowing creative project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill as a songwriter is coming up with memorable, impactful hooks that stick with listeners. Vocally, I’m a belter with character and conviction, able to convey emotion and power in every performance, bringing songs to life with authenticity and presence.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotive, powerful songwriting and storytelling rooted in modern soul, rock, and timeless melodic sensibilities. My work is driven by deep emotional truth and memorable hooks that resonate—drawing from my experience as a performer and my background in theatrical, narrative‑led music. My artistic identity is built around turning pain into power, infusing songs with resilience, authenticity, and a sense of narrative that stays with listeners long after the track ends.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with high-quality studio equipment to ensure top-notch sound. My setup includes an Electro-Voice RE20 and AKG 214 microphones, Adam A7X reference monitors, and Focusrite preamps, giving me the flexibility to deliver pristine vocals, keys, and full productions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start with a quick online consultation to understand your vision and make sure I’m the right fit for the project. Once we’ve aligned on goals and deadlines, I dive straight into creating the songs, hooks, lyrics, arrangements, or vocals you need—keeping the process smooth, collaborative, and focused on bringing your ideas to life.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists who are bold, emotive, and push musical boundaries. Some of my biggest influences are Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson, and Fleetwood Mac—they inspire me with their songwriting, vocal expression, and ability to connect deeply with listeners.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I’m a songwriter specializing in top lines, hooks, and lyrics, creating entire songs from scratch. I can work to a specific brief or explore complete creative freedom. I also offer backing vocals, keyboard parts, and can lay down lead vocals on your tracks, helping bring your music to life from concept to finished demo.
