Interview with Matsuyama

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was a Disney world music production that required me to deeply study a specific regional style, in this case Moroccan influences. My role was to produce the track from zero to final master: arranging and composing, recording session keys, bass, and additional instruments, then handling editing, mixing, and mastering. The goal was to translate traditional harmonic and rhythmic characteristics into a modern context without losing the authenticity of the original language.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Producing and mixing multi-genre releases for independent artists, plus session keys and arrangement work. I’m also building sound design focused content and exploring new synth and pedal based textures for modern productions.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: At the moment I’m new to SoundBetter, so I don’t want to name anyone I haven’t worked with directly yet. I’m happy to recommend collaborators after I’ve actually done a project together.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Digital for precision, speed, and recall, analog style tools when the song benefits from extra color and character. I choose what serves the music, not a rule.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Clear communication, fast turnaround, and musical decisions that elevate the song. I’ll deliver production, arrangement, and mixes that translate on real-world systems, with care and consistency from first pass to final files.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The creative freedom to add, blend, and shape ideas into something cohesive. I love hearing the finished record when it’s built with real care and attention to detail.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you make it sound more professional and bigger Yes, I focus on arrangement impact and mix translation. How many revisions Typically 2 rounds for mixes, 1 for session keys. How fast is the turnaround Mix first pass in 3 to 5 business days, keys in 48 to 72 hours, depending on files and scope. Do you deliver stems Yes, on request.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Because I work across multiple genres, some people assume it’s just marketing, like I’m trying to sell to anyone. In reality, I learned multiple styles over many years because it was required in my career. That made me genuinely eclectic. I love producing different genres, learning new languages in music, and blending influences to create unique concepts.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s the goal and vibe of the track Do you have 2 to 3 references What’s the deadline What deliverables do you need, mix only, stems, instrumental, a cappella Tempo and key Any must-keep creative effects or printed vocal FX Any problem areas you already know about

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Pick 2 to 3 reference songs, define what you want the listener to feel, and share what you like or dislike in your current mix. Send well organized stems and be specific with feedback. Clear direction beats endless revisions.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Mac Studio (M1 Max) Universal Audio Apollo x4 Warm Audio WA87 R2 Expressive E Osmose OLLO Audio X1 headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a session keyboardist and bassist, then moved into arranging, composition, and full production. Over 20+ years I’ve worked across multiple genres, helping artists turn demos into finished records through musical decisions first, then technical polish in the mix.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Modern, musical, and detail-focused. Strong structure, clear emotion, and mixes that sound big without losing depth and dynamics.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Jacob Collier, because I’m sure I’d learn a completely new, wide-angle perspective on music making, across styles, arrangements, and instrumentation.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Before adding more layers, fix the arrangement. If the chorus does not feel bigger than the verse, change density, register, and dynamics first. Mixing becomes easier and louder without sounding harsh.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, R&B, hip hop, trap, EDM, rock, indie, singer-songwriter, cinematic, modern worship, Latin, and hybrid styles.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Arrangements that elevate the song, then mixing that makes those choices translate with impact.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Musical decision making first. I strengthen structure, harmony, and dynamics, then translate that into production choices that make the song feel bigger, clearer, and more emotional. Clean editing, solid low end, and mixes that hold up on real-world systems.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: 1. I review your rough mix plus 2 to 3 references and your goal for the track 2. I propose a clear plan for arrangement, sound, and mix direction 3. First pass delivery 4. Focused revisions based on your notes 5. Final delivery of WAVs, plus instrumentals, a cappella, and stems if requested

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Mac Studio (M1 Max) with a Universal Audio Apollo x4 and UAD Satellite OCTO Core. Main capture chain includes a Warm Audio WA87 R2, plus hands-on performance and sound design with Roland A49 and Kiviak WoFi. I also integrate Expressive E Osmose, Arturia AstroLab, and Arturia PolyBrute for modern synth production and expressive parts. On the gear side, I’m a collaborating artist with Walrus Audio, Hotone, Death By Audio, and Radial Engineering, and an endorser for OLLO Audio (X1 headphones), Kali Audio, and Pig Hog Cables.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Hans Zimmer, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, Justin Bieber, Dirty Loops, Dylan Dunlap, Michael Jackson, Oasis, U2, Foo Fighters, Electro Deluxe, Ben l’Oncle Soul, Snarky Puppy, Jacob Collier.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I help artists turn demos into finished records through strong arrangement choices, session keys, and polished mixes. Most projects are multi-genre songs that need clearer structure, better dynamics, and a mix that translates everywhere.
