    Interview with Charagma

    1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

    2. A: The track is called "As jy Wou", The Poem was written in the mid 90's by Antjie Krog and I got permission to add music to it in November 2025. I had to write a Chorus for it and also had to keep the original writers "vibe". In addition to that it had to comply to Heritage and "feel" due to the writer's international status. I had to compose everything based on just the poem. Was a great project and also very proud to have work with a renown poet such as Antjie Krog.

    3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

    4. A: Nimue's Calling. 3rd Cinematic track for my Avalon album. Album will be released by q3 2026

    5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

    6. A: I only got here today. As far as I am aware I do not know anyone here.

    7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

    8. A: I do Raw demo tracks because they are merely an audible interpretation of what I wrote. So, everything is digital.

    9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

    10. A: Until you take the Track and scoresheets from me, nothing is set to stone. While it is an open project on myside, we change it to what you need.

    11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

    12. A: Hearing my music played somewhere.

    13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

    14. A: Why is the scoresheet so many pages? On Average a song of 5 minutes is roughly around 70 Bars. If you have 8 Instruments, you are looking at a Full Scoresheet of roughly 50-60 pages.

    15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

    16. A: The track I provide is not the final product. It is for the client to hear what is written on the pages. I do not hire artists (unless it is for my own music) so anything after I hand over the Scoresheets and audio files is for the client. I will (on client's request) add additional instruments if asked (E.g. Extra Bass Guitar etc.).

    17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

    18. A: What Genre do you need? Roughly what BPM? What key will your vocalist be singing in? Highest and lowest notes your vocalist can sing? What "vibe" or "feeling do you want from the song? Do you have a melody? Do you have Lyrics? By when do you need the composition?

    19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

    20. A: Have a rough idea of what you are looking for. Saying "Write me a song" sounds easy but leaves it with millions of options. Have a Genre, estimated bpm and the kind of "vibe" you want. If you can tell me what is should be about it will make my life so much easier as well.

    21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

    22. A: Guitar, Laptop, Solar Charger and a way to connect to the internet. With that I will still be able to compose and relax.

    23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

    24. A: Started playing Piano age 7. Sang Choir pretty much most of mu Highschool years. Was a rhythm guitarist for various bands, on stage, off stage and recording. I started writing/composing at around age 25 and only recently decided to try the international market. Most of my life just played, sung and composed locally.

    25. Q: How would you describe your style?

    26. A: All depends on the client, but I enjoy not following strict song structures etc. A fast verse with a slow chorus is something I do often.

    27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

    28. A: Very hard question. I do not have someone specific I would like to work with. Each artist is great in their own unique way and pinpointing 1 specific artist would make it seem as if others are not as important.

    29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

    30. A: Always leave headroom for improvement on your limiters. The secret is not the instruments but the placement of the instruments. E.g. Large Hall with listener in the third row.

    31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

    32. A: Client dependent but have done several pieces for Cinematics lately

    33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

    34. A: Unique progressions with inversions and shimmers.

    35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

    36. A: If I am given just lyrics or melody/lyrics, I will create a full instrumental track from it.

    37. Q: What's your typical work process?

    38. A: For me (Everyone is different) I would first generate a Unique Chord progression in the key the Client needs. Once the progression is approved by the client, I will start layering the instruments according to the client's needs.

    39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

    40. A: I work directly in Dorico pro6.1 with a normal computer keyboard and mouse. Being a composer using Dorico just gives an audible representation of what I wrote for the client.

    41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

    42. A: This would be a huge list. I am a huge lover of first releases. They are in general closest to what the composer had in mind.

    43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

    44. A: Most of my clients will come to me with a genre and an idea. Together we work from there. First getting the "Vibe" my client needs where after we would work on a melody and lyrics together.
