Interview with CJ4Y / Cedric
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm especially proud of the educational music projects I've developed in partnership with the city of Heilbronn. These aren't just one-off workshops - they're comprehensive programs bringing professional music production into schools, giving students hands-on experience with recording, production, and performance. My role spans everything: curriculum development, technical setup, teaching, recording student work, and coordinating showcase events. One highlight was organizing a full concert at Louis-Lepoix-School as the main coordinator - managing logistics, artist liaison, technical planning, and live execution. Watching students who'd never touched production software create their own tracks, then perform them live for their community, was incredibly powerful. These projects combine all my skills - audio engineering, event coordination, teaching, and project management - but more importantly, they create real impact. Students discover potential they didn't know they had, and some have continued pursuing music because of these programs. The partnership with the city has grown over time, with multiple events and ongoing initiatives. This work proves that professional audio services aren't just about commercial success - they're about building community and opening doors for the next generation. It's the project I'm most proud of because the impact extends far beyond the technical work.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently producing new Liquid Drum & Bass releases for my own project while working with several RnB and Rap artists on their upcoming EPs. I'm also coordinating technical aspects for upcoming live events and developing educational music workshops for local schools. It's a busy mix of creative and technical work, which is exactly how I like it. Each project informs the others.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm building my network on the platform and would gladly recommend collaborators once I've worked with them directly. I believe in vouching only for people whose work I've personally experienced. As I connect with other professionals here, I'll absolutely make recommendations for services outside my expertise - mastering specialists, session musicians, etc.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid approach. Digital gives flexibility, recall, and consistency that's essential for modern workflow. Analog brings warmth, character, and happy accidents that spark creativity. I use digital as my foundation with selective analog processing where it adds value. The debate is overblown - what matters is the result, not the path. Great music has been made both ways; bad music too. It's the ears, not the gear.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise professional quality, reliable communication, and genuine investment in your success. Your track will translate well across all playback systems, compete with professional releases in your genre, and be delivered on time. I'll be honest about what's working and what needs adjustment - my goal is your success, not just completing the transaction. If you're not satisfied, we'll work together until you are.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The moment a client hears their vision come to life and their reaction makes everything worth it. I love the problem-solving aspect - every song presents unique challenges - and the variety of working across genres keeps things fresh. Plus, being part of someone's creative journey, helping them level up their sound, is genuinely fulfilling. Music connects people, and I get to facilitate that connection.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "How long will it take?" Mixing typically takes 3-5 days per song, production projects vary based on complexity. I prioritize quality over speed, but I'm transparent about timelines and always hit agreed deadlines. "How many revisions are included?" Two revision rounds are standard. This is usually plenty when we've communicated well upfront. Additional rounds available if needed. "Can you make it sound like [famous artist]?" I can get you in that sonic ballpark, but the goal is making YOUR track sound professional and competitive, not cloning someone else. Your unique voice matters.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just "making it louder" or "pressing the magic button." In reality, it's hundreds of micro-decisions about balance, frequency, space, and dynamics that add up to a cohesive whole. Good mixing is invisible - you don't notice the technique, you just feel the emotion and impact. Another misconception: that expensive gear makes great mixes. Skill, experience, and good ears matter far more than fancy plugins.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision for this track? (References help immensely) Who's your target audience? Where will this be released? (Streaming, radio, video, etc.) What's your timeline and budget? What's worked or not worked in previous mixes/productions? Are there specific elements you want emphasized? How many revision rounds do you anticipate needing? These questions help me deliver exactly what you need, not what I assume you want.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to their previous work and ensure their style aligns with your vision. Communication is everything - find someone who asks questions and genuinely wants to understand your goals, not just execute technical tasks. Check reviews for reliability and professionalism. Don't just chase the cheapest option; invest in quality that will represent you well. And be clear about your budget and timeline upfront - good providers will work with you to find solutions that fit.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop - the brain of any modern production Audio interface - the bridge between digital and analog worlds Quality headphones - for those times when monitoring isn't available MIDI keyboard - for playing in ideas quickly Portable recorder - to capture inspiration anywhere Honestly though, great music has been made with far less. Tools matter, but ears and musicality matter more.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I discovered music production in 2020 and immediately knew this was my path. I dove deep - studying Audio Engineering formally while simultaneously building practical skills through my own releases and client work. In 2023, I founded my company and studio, transforming my passion into a full-time business. Alongside production, I trained as an event technician, giving me comprehensive understanding of audio from recording to live performance. Six years in, I'm still early in my career but bringing professional results backed by formal training and real-world experience.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, punchy, and musical. I prioritize clarity and impact without sacrificing warmth or emotion. My mixes hit hard when they need to but breathe when they should. I'm not chasing trends or trying to impose a signature sound - instead, I enhance what makes your track unique while ensuring it translates professionally across all systems. Think modern polish with timeless musicality.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with someone like Jorja Smith - her music sits at the intersection of RnB, Soul, and electronic influences, which aligns perfectly with my skill set. Her approach to emotion and space in production is something I deeply respect. Beyond dream collaborations, I'm always excited to work with emerging artists who are hungry, coachable, and willing to push their sound to the next level.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Reference, reference, reference. Always have 3-5 professionally mixed tracks in your genre loaded in your session. A/B compare constantly - not to copy, but to calibrate your ears. Your mix should compete with those references in loudness, clarity, and impact. It's the fastest way to develop your ears and catch issues before they become problems. Most amateur mixes fail because they exist in a vacuum.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My work spans electronic music (Drum & Bass, House, EDM), Hip-Hop and German Rap, RnB and Soul, and Pop productions. While I produce my own Liquid Drum & Bass releases, my studio work is genre-diverse. This versatility means I understand the specific sonic expectations of each style - the sub-bass weight in electronic music, the vocal clarity in RnB, the punch in Hip-Hop. Every genre gets the treatment it deserves.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal production and treatment. Whether it's recording, editing, tuning, or mixing vocals, I excel at making voices sit perfectly in a mix while retaining their character and emotion. I know how to balance presence and polish - your vocals will cut through without sounding harsh, and sit in the mix without getting buried. This skill translates across all genres I work in.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring fresh ears and objective perspective. As the artist, you're often too close to hear what's working and what's not - I identify what serves the song and what distracts from it. Beyond technical skills, I bring musicality and arrangement sense to enhance emotional impact. I'm not just adjusting faders; I'm helping your track communicate its message as powerfully as possible. Plus, my systematic approach means consistent quality and reliable delivery.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start every project with a conversation - understanding your vision, references, and what success looks like for you. For mixing, I begin with a rough balance to establish the vibe, then work systematically through elements: drums for foundation, bass for power, vocals for clarity, and everything else to support the story. I deliver a first mix for your feedback, then refine based on your input. For production, I create demos based on your direction, iterate until the foundation feels right, then polish. Communication throughout keeps us aligned.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I operate a fully-equipped studio optimized for both precision and creativity. My monitoring chain includes Adam T8V in an acoustically treated room, ensuring accurate translation. I work primarily in FL-Studio with a hybrid setup combining analog warmth and digital flexibility. Key pieces include Apollo Twin and my lovely Neumann TLM107, alongside industry-standard plugins from UAD, Fabfilter, Waves, and Native Instruments. The space is designed for both focused technical work and comfortable creative sessions with artists.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm heavily influenced by producers like Calibre and Alix Perez in the Drum & Bass world for their attention to sonic detail and musicality. In the broader production landscape, I admire Finneas for his minimalist approach that still hits emotionally, and Metro Boomin for his consistency in creating distinct sonic identities for artists. These producers show that technical excellence and creative vision aren't mutually exclusive.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work involves mixing and mastering for independent artists across genres. I take raw recordings and transform them into polished, radio-ready tracks that translate well across all playback systems. I also produce custom beats and instrumentals, particularly for Rap, RnB, and electronic music artists who need professional production backing their vision.
