Interview with Amr Elsheikh
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of a recent EDM track I mastered for a rising producer. The mix was very complex with many layers, and my role was to bring clarity to the low-end while ensuring the track had the maximum energy and loudness required for club play. Seeing the track gain massive positive feedback on streaming platforms was incredibly rewarding, as it proved that the right mastering can truly elevate a song's impact.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on mastering a couple of high-energy EDM tracks for international DJs and a modern Pop EP for a rising independent artist.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: SoundBetter is full of incredible world-class talent. I’m always happy to recommend top-tier session musicians or vocalists on this platform to help my clients complete their vision.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I believe in a hybrid approach. I use high-end digital tools for their precision and surgical control, but I also love the warmth and character that analog saturation adds to a mix. It’s all about using the right tool for the specific song.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is absolute dedication to quality and professional communication. I don't stop until you are 100% satisfied with how your music sounds. Your success is my success.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is the 'Aha!' moment when an artist hears their song mastered for the first time and realizes its full potential. Being the final link in the creative chain is a huge responsibility that I truly enjoy.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: While I can significantly improve a mix, a great master starts with a great mix. I always provide feedback on the mix before I start to ensure we get the best possible final result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mastering is just about making a song louder. In reality, it's about balance, translation across different sound systems, and giving the track that final professional 'glue' and sheen that it lacks.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the intended platform for the release? Do you have any reference tracks that match the vibe you're going for? And are there any specific elements in the mix you want me to highlight or control during mastering?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Always listen to the portfolio and 'Before & After' samples first. Communication is key, so make sure your engineer understands your artistic vision. Also, don't just go for the loudest master; go for the one that has the best clarity and emotional impact.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My MacBook Pro, Universal Audio Apollo Interface, Focal Shape Monitors, Sennheiser HD650 Headphones, and the FabFilter Pro Bundle
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my journey as a producer which gave me a deep understanding of music structure. Over the years, I pivoted to professional mixing and mastering, refining my skills through hundreds of projects for independent and established artists
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is clean, punchy, and modern. I aim for a 'commercial sound' that stands out on streaming platforms while respecting the original mix's character
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like The Weeknd or Calvin Harris because of their commitment to high-fidelity sound and innovative production styles
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always leave enough headroom in your mix (at least -6dB) before sending it for mastering. This allows the mastering process to breathe and yields much cleaner, more powerful results
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on EDM, modern Pop, and Hip-Hop, but my technical expertise allows me to master any genre to professional industry standards
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my critical ear and ability to achieve maximum loudness and clarity while preserving the track's dynamics and emotional impact
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a 'fresh ear' and a commitment to quality. My goal isn't just to make a song louder, but to give it depth, excitement, and a professional finish that allows it to stand out in a competitive market. I treat every track as if it were my own release
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by carefully analyzing the mix to identify its strengths and areas for improvement. My process includes surgical EQ for clarity, multi-band compression for control, and harmonic saturation for warmth. I always provide a 'Before & After' comparison and offer revisions to ensure the final master perfectly aligns with the artist's vision
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio features a hybrid setup designed for maximum sonic accuracy. I use high-end monitoring (Focal/Genelec) in a treated environment, powered by Universal Audio (UAD) interfaces and a curated selection of industry-standard plugins from FabFilter, iZotope, and Waves to ensure a 'radio-ready' sound
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am deeply inspired by the precision and sonic clarity of engineers like Luca Pretolesi and Serban Ghenea. Artist-wise, the production quality of legends like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren sets the standard I strive for in every project I master
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily specialize in professional Mixing and Mastering, with a heavy focus on Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and modern Pop. My work involves taking raw tracks and turning them into polished, high-energy masters that are ready for club systems and major streaming platforms like Spotify
