Session vocalist, producer, songwriter, and guitarist helping artists bring songs to life. I deliver top-line vocals, session work, co-writing, production, mixing, and mastering with an analog-driven workflow for clean, emotional performances and polished Top 40-ready mixes.
I’m Ben Schwarzwalder of Black Forest Sounds — a singer, producer, songwriter, mix engineer, and multi-instrumentalist delivering exactly what each song needs.
I specialize in session vocals (top-line), songwriting & co-writing, full production, mixing, and mastering, using a hybrid analog/digital setup for warmth, depth, and character without sacrificing modern clarity.
I adapt to each project’s needs, whether providing a single vocal track, co-writing hooks, adding instrumental layers, producing full tracks, or handling the mix from start to finish. I collaborate closely with artists, labels, and publishers, stepping in wherever needed to enhance the song while respecting their creative vision.
I also provide guitar and bass performance that integrates seamlessly into the production process.
Whether you’re starting from a voice memo or need a polished, release-ready track, I focus on great songs, strong emotion, and professional results.

I had the pleasure of working with Ben working on getting my mixes to a professional level. I had a song that was already done, I sent Ben the stems and he worked his magic and totally turned the song into a masterpiece with the same stems I had already made.
He explained what he was doing so clearly, I'm now hearing a definitely difference in my misses as well. Will definitely recommend Ben to others

I have worked with Ben on multiple projects and businesses over 20+ years. He is not only an absolute professional and extremely detailed oriented, but is only ever satisfied when the project is completed to perfection. Ben is the most reliable and trustworthy person I know. Musically, I have had the privilege to work with him on B+K tracks, recording drums and playing live performances. In every case, the attention to detail and perfection came through in every way. On top of delivering quality on everything he touches, he has an ear for just the right sound to fit the specific project needs.

I've known Ben for around 15+ years and I can say his drive, attention to detail, song writing and ability to communicated ideas clearly is by far one of the best I've worked with. Great ideas, great gear, committed to the best sounds/tones/vibes you can get. Don't hesitate to shoot a message to see how he can help you out.

I had so much fun playing with Ben! His feel and technical savvy makes it so much fun to jam with him.
Interview with Black Forest Sounds
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by meeting with the client to fully understand their vision, goals, and the sound they want to achieve. From there, I set up my session, choose the right tools and workflow, and dive into the project, always keeping the client’s goals at the center. Communication and collaboration are key. My process is designed to ensure that every project reaches its full potential while keeping the client informed and involved along the way.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is designed to handle every stage of a project, from initial idea to finished master. With a professional environment, high-quality analog and digital tools, and a variety of instruments and microphones, I can capture performances and produce tracks at the highest level, all under one roof.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The questions vary from project to project, but they usually revolve around process, direction, and expectations—things like timelines, creative approach, and how we’ll get the best possible result. My goal with every answer is to help the client feel comfortable, confident, and excited about what we’re building together. Clear communication is a big part of my process, and I want every client to feel supported and aligned from start to finish.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A Neumann U87, an Avalon 737, a Distressor, a Gibson Les Paul, and a Mesa Boogie amp. Together, they cover everything from pristine vocals to aggressive guitars and give me the flexibility to create polished, professional records in almost any situation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career began as a songwriter and vocalist, writing songs for over 25+ years and singing since childhood. I studied voice at The Ohio State University and spent time playing in bands and touring, which led to extensive studio experience. That exposure sparked my interest in production, recording, and mixing, and I’ve spent the last 15+ years building my skills, studio, and workflow. Today, I work across session vocals, songwriting, production, mixing, and mastering, bringing a well-rounded, artist-first perspective to every project.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as adaptable and song-first. Whether I’m producing, mixing, writing, or performing, my goal is always to serve the energy and emotion of the song rather than impose a signature sound. I approach each project like a chameleon, shaping my choices to fit what the music needs while enhancing its direction. I enjoy pushing creative boundaries and thinking outside the box, but always in a way that respects the core elements of the genre and the vision of the project.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’m most inspired by artists who are genuinely passionate about their craft and fully invested in their music. I love working with people who put themselves into their songs, are driven to grow, and care deeply about the final result. That kind of commitment fuels great collaboration and leads to the best records, regardless of an artist’s level or following.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get it right at the source. Great performances, tones, and arrangements solve most problems before mixing even begins.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across a wide range of genres, with a strong focus on pop, synthwave singer-songwriter, Christian, R&B, country, and rock and EDM. I also enjoy working on gospel and other faith-based styles, and I’m always open to new sounds and creative directions.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m constantly learning from others and inspired by a wide range of musicians and producers. From a production and mixing perspective, people like Max Martin, Joe Carrell, Joel Wanesek, Rick Rubin, CLA influence how I approach sound design and problem-solving. Vocally, I draw inspiration from artists across eras and genres, Frank Sinatra, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Black Sabbath, Muse and Daft Punk, among many others. Their creativity and mastery push me to grow, experiment, and continually step up my game with every project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on a range of client projects across multiple genres, alongside a full-length pop album. My days usually involve mixing, production, and refining records to be release-ready while helping artists bring their creative vision to life.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid. That’s the reality of modern music production, but analog will always be a core part of my workflow. High-quality analog gear brings depth, character, and musicality that digital still can’t fully replicate. Used intentionally, it adds that final 5–10% that separates a good mix from a truly exceptional one.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is simple: I treat every project as if it were my own. Who I am as a person bleeds into my work—I’m deeply passionate, fully invested, and genuinely excited about the music my clients bring me. I strive for excellence in every detail and often go beyond what’s expected because I care about the outcome. When we work together, I’m not just delivering a service, I’m sharing in your musical journey and doing everything I can to help your music sound the absolute best it can be.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love working with a wide range of genres and people, and the constant creative challenge that comes with each project. Every song pushes me to grow, evolve, and refine my craft, and I’m always striving to be better than the last mix or production I delivered. That challenge keeps me sharp and allows me to bring my absolute best to every artist I work with.
