Hey! I’m Gabi, a UK-based session drummer and percussionist with 10 years of experience. I’ve played on many records, most notably Declan McKenna’s Zeros, which peaked at #2 on the UK charts. I’m the percussionist for indie pop icons The 1975 and Bastille, and have played drums for artists including Declan McKenna, Perrie, CMAT, and Two Door Cinema Club.

I provide studio-quality remote recordings using professional, reliable gear to deliver high-quality results every time. My primary service is drop-in, mix-ready multitracks that integrate seamlessly into your songs. I work collaboratively or follow strict guidelines to bring your ideas to life.

I’m a pocket-driven drummer, with attention to detail, nuance, and feel. I focus on creating atmosphere, whether high-energy or chilled-out, because feeling is everything. I can also layer drums with multitrack percussion to add bounce, ambience, or texture wherever needed.

I specialise in pop and indie, but also have extensive experience playing drum & bass, rock, acoustic/singer-songwriter and country. I work very comfortably across a wide range of styles.

I'm friendly, reliable, and easy to communicate with, I always deliver on time and to the highest standard. I’m song-led, focused on serving the music and helping your creations reach their full potential.

Interview with Gabi King

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: - What’s the style or genre of the song? - How do you want the drums and percussion to sound and feel (eg. 80's, laidback, small, high energy, tight)? - Any reference tracks or specific sections to focus on? - What’s the tempo, time signature, and DAW/session format? - Do you prefer a tight or loose feel, and how much creative input should I provide? - What’s the desired turnaround time? - Do you want raw multitracks or mixed/processed stems? - Are there any specific instruments or set ups you'd like (eg. tambourine in chorus, shaker in bridge, no toms or cymbals etc.)?

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: It’s always helpful to provide references so I can get a sense of the sound and vibe you’re aiming for. Any notes for specific parts or grooves are also useful and make the process smoother. Correctly labelling files with BPM and instrument info (e.g: SONGNAME_ARTISTNAME_INSTRUMENT_BPM) makes it easier to drop stems into a session. Starting all stems from bar 1 also helps everything slot in quickly.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: My beloved Cedar of Lebanon wood tambourine, my late great uncles 1930's snare drum, Zildjian Avedis hats, my MacBook, 22" British Drum Co. Lounge Series kick drum. Probably a fishing rod too.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: My 10 year career as a session player has taken me to stages and studios all over the world. I was plucked out of music school to play drums for indie pop icon Declan McKenna, and from there the ball hasn't stopped rolling. From playing drums with Two Door Cinema Club and Perrie Edwards, to playing percussion with The 1975 and headlining Glastonbury.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: My style is pocket-driven, feel-focused, and creative. I combine solid drum grooves with dynamic percussion textures, inspired by classic song craft and modern production. I like to blend energy, emotion, and sonic texture to elevate every track I work on.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I'd love to work with Fleetwood Mac, they're my favourite band and I've always loved Mick Fleetwood's approach to drums. It's so musical and dynamic!

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I always record with a diffused dynamic mic over looking my kit. This acts as a 'trash' mic. Add a little distortion and have it sitting low in the drum mix, it adds a nice bit of character and grit.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I've spent the majority of my career working in the pop, rock + indie fields. I've worked with a lot of guitar bands, as well as solo artists. Recently, I've been playing a lot of drum + bass, country and funk music too. I like to keep my palette broad!

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skill is creating drum and percussion parts that serve the song. I have a strong sense of feel, groove, and dynamics, knowing when to drive energy and when to leave space.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring strong energy, groove, and pocket-focused drums, with creative, dynamic percussion parts and plenty of options to shape your production. I’m friendly, collaborative, and genuinely love making music :)

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Once I receive the track, tempo, references, and any direction, I’ll listen through the song to lock in the feel and work out how drums and percussion can best serve and elevate it. I’ll then record two or three full takes, choosing the strongest performance and putting together a quick rough mix to send back . If everything feels right, I’ll bounce and deliver clean, clearly labeled multitracks ready to drop into your session. If you’d like changes, I’m happy to make a revision before final delivery. Communication is easy throughout, and turnaround is always reliable.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: My studio setup is built for professional, reliable remote recording. I record through two Focusrite 18i20 interfaces with up to 16 channels, using Logic Pro 11. My microphone selection is predominantly sE Electronics, including a matched pair of sE VR1 ribbons alongside classic Shure SM57s, all routed through ART P16 patch bays for flexible and efficient tracking. I play exclusively handmade British Drum Company kits in a range of sizes, crafted from birch and mahogany to deliver both attack and warmth. My cymbal setup consists of a wide selection of Zildjian cymbals, allowing me to shape tone and texture to suit each song. For percussion, I use LP Percussion, with a broad collection of congas, bongos, and handheld instruments to add groove, ambience, and character where needed.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I find inspiration from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, André 3000, Rick Rubin, Mark Ronson, and Anderson Paak (to name a few). I’m drawn to retro-meets-modern production, honouring classic soul with a contemporary edge, as well as the forward-thinking sound and emotion of Fred again.., Djo, Mk.gee + Billie Eilish.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Most of my work involves remotely recording drum and percussion parts that enhance feel, groove, and texture, providing producers + artists with mix-ready multitracks that serve the song.
