If you need evocative, stream-of-consciousness lyrics or witty pop hooks, I’m your guy. I’ve crafted a holistic approach to songwriting, combining years of DIY artist experience with a Songwriting degree from Berklee Online. My band, Stargazy Pie, has been featured in programs such as MoPOP’s SoundOff! And STG’s More Music at The Moore.
-Hi! My name is Jack Stoker, a 23-or-something singer/songwriter from Washington State. I am thrilled to offer lyric and melody writing services, backed by years of DIY artist experience, and a Bachelor of Arts in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music Online.
-I specialize in rock and pop lyrics, which use evocative, witty, and off-the-wall imagery to tell a story.
-For examples of my work in the pop and rock genres, you can check out my band, Stargazy Pie. As the sole lyricist of the band, I blend my personal songwriting style with the heavier sounds my bandmates employ.
-For examples of my singer/songwriter and indie work, check out my solo project, under the name ‘Stump.’ I use a lot of imagery in my lyrics here, and arrange and mix the songs all by myself!

Interview with Stump Rivers
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am particularly proud of my band's second album, ‘Pacific Northwestitis.’ I was the sole lyricist on the album, and wrote most of the melodies. I am proud of the emotion I was able to pour into the songs, as well as the different and unique ways I was able to express my feelings. I also had to topline a few of the songs on the album, which was a challenge, but I feel like I rose to the task to create fun and interesting melodies.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My band, Stargazy Pie, is currently working on material for our next album. I am also working on my solo career, under the name ‘Stump Rivers.'
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have any reference songs that could help me understand the vibe/direction you want for the project? Do you have a backing track already created? Is this song for personal or commercial use? Do you plan on performing it live? What vocal range is your singer most comfortable in?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My first item would be a small recording device with a lot of memory. I record almost every step of the lyric and melody writing process, as there are plenty of lighting-in-a-bottle moments that occur during writing that can’t easily be recalled/replicated. Always recording allows me to capture those moments. Second, I would bring a big solar panel in order to power this recording device. Third, I would bring my Breedlove acoustic guitar, which is my primary writing instrument. For my final two items, I’d want to bring an extremely large notebook and a pen, so I can write down lyrics.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work on Pop, Rock, and Alternative music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a simple at home studio, featuring a Focusrite interface and a selection of microphones. I record vocals in an untreated room underneath my staircase, and use Pro Tools as my primary digital audio workstation. It's a real DIY setup, but it works great for creating demos!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Lyrically, I absolutely adore artists like Lizzy McAlpine, Phoebe Bridgers, and Beabadoobe. My style has been heavily influenced by Matty Healy from The 1975, especially his stream-of-consciousness songwriting.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I write lyrics and melodies for the Pop, Rock, Acoustic, and Alternative genres.
