Interview with Bradley Coleman
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My main contribution to my work has been my dedication to reach the artists vision and ability to deliver this through my extensive music references to pull upon. I thrive in taking a song from it's most basic form and adding arrangement to maximise the songs potential in line with the artists goal.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process always begins with listening and taking notes. I focus on what are the most important features of a song and the brief I have been given. To develop this, I will begin recording a plethora of ideas and then narrowing them down to the best few. During the process, I like to maintain communication and offer drafts to keep the artist or client updated should they wish to be included in that process. However, I am equally happy working independently and sending the final product when finished.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My current guitars are my D'angelico deluxe Atlantic (perfect for R&B, rock, pop), my Fender strat (perfect for a bit of everything!), my Taylor acoustic, a mandolin and squire classic vibe bass. This is being produced through the Universal Audio Volt, many high end pedals and amp plugins. I currently use the Audio Technics 2020 and Shure sm57 and 58 for mics.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My current inspirations are Stevie Wonder, D'angelo, Nile Rodgers and Nick Drake. This is due to each of their unique sounds and contributions to their individual genres. I have learnt guitar techniques from Nile Rodgers, Mark Lettieri, Jeff Beck, Grant Green, Guthrie Govan and this has really shaped my playing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am mostly hired as a live and studio session guitarist often providing BVs as well. This is mostly in the funk, folk and pop genres but I'm experienced in metal, classic rock, modern and straight ahead jazz and many other genres. I am also a capable producer and arranger. My role usually includes providing musical direction for live backing tracks or studio arranging. This includes adding electronic elements, backing vocal and string arrangements and developing songs from their most basic form to the released product.
