Interview with Kodak Jonez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I helped bring several independent artists’ songs from rough demos to fully polished releases. The transformation in quality—and their reaction when they heard the final version—reminded me why I do this. Whether mixing, mastering, or producing, I love elevating a song to its full potential.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m remixing and remastering older catalog material for upcoming releases, building new production templates, and working on fresh beats and mixes for 2026 projects.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital—for speed, flexibility, and recall. I can adapt quicker to different styles and make revisions fast without sacrificing quality.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I’ll treat your music with the same care I give my own, and I won’t stop until the track sounds professional, balanced, and release-ready.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists hear their music the way they imagined it—and sometimes better. Seeing a client get excited about their finished track is the best part.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you make my vocals sound cleaner and more present? A: Yes. I specialize in vocal clarity, tone shaping, and noise removal to make vocals sit naturally and professionally in the mix.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just turning levels up and down. In reality, it's shaping emotion, enhancing performance, and making every sound feel intentional.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your vision for this track? Do you have any reference songs? What’s the emotion or message you want the listener to feel? Is there anything specific you want changed or highlighted?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a clear idea of what you want your song to feel like, and don’t hesitate to share reference tracks. The more information you give me, the better I can tailor the mix to your vision.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, audio interface, studio headphones, MIDI keyboard, and my favorite mixing/mastering plugin suite.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started producing and mixing in the early 2000s and worked on multiple independent projects, group albums, and collaborations. Over the years I developed into a producer-engineer hybrid who understands music from creation to final master.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, punchy, warm, and detailed. I like mixes that feel powerful but still leave room for emotion and space.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with DJ Quik or The Mekanix because of their musicality and attention to detail. Their sound blends musical groove with street energy—something I naturally connect with in my own production and engineering style.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never start mixing before organizing. Label your tracks, color-code them, and clean up unwanted noise. A clean session leads to a clean mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, boom bap, trap, R&B, drill, soulful, dark, cinematic, and uplifting styles. I also mix podcasts, ads, and voice-over projects for post-production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is understanding how to make a song feel balanced, impactful, and professional—whether that means improving a beat, tightening vocals, or giving a final mix the polish it needs.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, energy, and emotion. My goal is to make every element sit exactly where it belongs so your performance hits the listener the way you intended. Whether it's a beat, a vocal, or a full production, I help bring out the best version of the record.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening closely to understand the artist’s vision. Then I clean the audio, balance levels, tighten the low end, shape the vocals, and build a solid mix. I finish with polishing and mastering to make sure the track translates well on all systems. I also deliver revisions so artists get exactly the sound they want.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a treated home studio built for accurate mixing and detailed sound shaping. My setup includes quality studio monitors, professional headphones, a reliable audio interface, and industry-standard plugins for mixing, mastering, vocal processing, and sound design.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: DJ Quik, Ant Banks, Teddy Riley, DJ Premier, The Mekanix, and Kanye West (YE). Each of them shaped my approach to rhythm, groove, and musical detail. Their ability to create timeless records inspires how I mix and produce today.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in mixing, mastering, and enhancing vocal and instrumental productions. Most clients come to me to take their raw recordings and turn them into polished, professional-quality tracks with clean vocals, balanced low end, and a strong overall mix. I also upgrade beats, tighten arrangements, and bring older recordings up to a modern standard.
