Interview with Peter Schwarz
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: At the moment, I’m working on my own album, which will be released in German. In the past, I’ve collaborated with producers like Meleebeats, creating melodies for artists such as Migos and Comethazine. While in Atlanta, I worked with producers like Spaindagoat and various local artists. I’ve also created songs alongside artists like YXUNGTARZAAN. Currently, I’m focused on expanding my skills and building my client base.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Satisfaction. I won't stop until we create what you envisioned.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with prospective clients, I ask questions such as: What feeling or emotion should your song evoke? What visual imagery comes to mind when you think of this track? How can we work together to bring that vision to life? How open are you to new ideas? What is the story or message behind your song, and which elements are most important to you? These questions help me fully understand the client’s vision and ensure the final result aligns with their artistic intent.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: No matter the genre or style of music, passion is the most important aspect when choosing a provider. If your provider doesn’t share your passion for music, it will show in their work. Always make sure to communicate your vision clearly and thoroughly—whether it’s for mixing and mastering, songwriting, or production—so that the provider can fully understand your goals and bring them to life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would define my musical style as cinematic and emotionally evocative, focused on creating songs that capture and reflect specific moments. My work often feels like it could play over the end credits of a dramatic, poignant, or life-changing film. Because I experience music very intensely, listening to a track immediately evokes vivid imagery and narrative in my mind. In my own music, I strive to create sounds and emotions that I don’t hear anywhere else, crafting a unique and personal sonic world.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like Fredagain, Sampha, thxsomuch, Mac Miller, Mk.gee, and Yeat. These artists stand out in their respective genres through their individuality and creativity, which I find incredibly inspiring. Collaborating with them would not only be an artistic opportunity but also a chance to understand their workflow and creative mindset—how they approach music, production, marketing, and the overall artistic process. Engaging with such minds would be invaluable for both my growth and the unique perspective I bring to any project.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Gain staging is a fundamental step that can make a huge difference in the quality of a mix. Controlling the initial signal levels helps prevent clipping as well as unpleasant harmonics that can occur when pushing volume through plugins or hardware. After organizing the stems, I always start by gain staging each track—carefully checking and adjusting the level of every individual track relative to the rest of the mix, either based on reference points or intuitive judgment. This ensures a clean, balanced foundation before any processing or mixing begins.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: The type of music I work on varies constantly, especially since I also create my own music (samples available upon request). My musical landscape is broad and ever-evolving. I work across a wide range of genres—from Contemporary R&B and UK Garage to Country, as well as numerous main and subgenres in between. This versatility allows me to adapt to virtually any artistic direction and deliver results that feel authentic, genre-aware, and creatively refined.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skills are mixing and mastering, as well as songwriting and composition. These abilities form the core of my creative work. Thanks to my deep affinity for music, I stay closely connected to current trends, emerging sounds, and new creative possibilities every single day. This constant engagement allows me to blend technical precision with modern artistic sensibilities, ensuring that every project I work on feels both polished and contemporary.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: With over 10 years of songwriting experience, I bring a deep creative intuition and a uniquely versatile skill set to every project. Under my artist name pxrplejay, clients can explore my personal work to get a sense of my artistic identity and the emotional depth I bring to music. Music is not only my passion—it’s my mission. As a neurodivergent creator, I experience music with heightened intensity and emotional detail, which allows me to tap into nuances that many others might overlook. This sensitivity enables me to capture authentic feeling, translate emotions into sound, and craft melodies, lyrics, and arrangements that resonate deeply. My diverse listening habits across virtually all genres allow me to draw inspiration from everywhere: Drum & Bass, Indie Rock, House, EDM, Hip-Hop, Afrobeats, and even highly experimental, genre-blending styles. I’ve explored and integrated these influences extensively in my own music, which gives me the ability to offer a fresh, unique perspective tailored to any artistic vision. I work in a structured, focused, and highly dedicated manner, ensuring that every contribution—whether it’s songwriting, composition, production ideas, or emotional depth—enhances the song in a meaningful and impactful way.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My workflow is highly client-oriented. I begin by discussing the client’s vision in detail to fully understand the emotion, direction, and intention behind the project. Once I have a clear grasp of the desired outcome—and depending on the creative freedom the client allows—I introduce my own ideas, shaped by my long-standing background as a music lover and musician. From there, I create an initial sketch: this could be a rough mix and master, a draft composition, or the framework of a full song for songwriting projects. I then send this first version to the client for feedback, adjustments, and refinement. With each round of communication, the picture becomes more defined and aligned with the client’s expectations. In mixing and mastering, I start by analyzing the track layout, organizing all instruments and stems, and noting the client’s preferences for clarity, presence, and overall feel. I balance levels, shape the sonic space, and build an audio landscape that reflects the artistic vision we developed together—because to me, art is more than numbers and words; it’s a shared creation. I continue refining every piece until my client is fully satisfied, ensuring the final result is a true representation of their vision brought to life.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is designed to deliver clean, detailed, and reliable results across every stage of the production process. For vocal recording, I use a Rode NT1-A microphone, enclosed in a NEEWER NW-6 Vocal Booth to ensure optimal sound isolation and minimal ambient noise—perfect for capturing anything from quick demos to full vocal performances. When monitoring, I work with Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro closed-back headphones for tracking and mixing, and switch to my Sennheiser HD650 semi-open headphones for precise fine-tuning and critical listening. My recordings and playback are routed through a reliable Steinberg UR22 audio interface. I also incorporate live instruments into my work, including three guitars—an electric, a classical, and an acoustic (western) guitar. For room-translation checks, I use a Panasonic SC-UA7 speaker system, as well as JBL 510BT headphones to test how mixes perform in everyday listening environments. Most of my composition and production takes place on my Acer Predator Helios 300 (U.S. model), supported by a secondary Acer display for an efficient dual-screen workflow. I’m currently expanding my setup and will be adding a MacBook to further enhance cross-platform compatibility and mobility. This setup ensures a flexible and professional environment for delivering high-quality music production, composition, and mixing & mastering services.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Artists such as Rachel Chinouriri, Sampha, and Jean Dawson, as well as Ritchy Mitch & The Coalminers and EKKSTACY, are key sources of inspiration for me—among many others. My broad musical taste across genres keeps my creative approach highly versatile. In terms of mixing engineers, I draw influence from the likes of Dave Pensado, Mike Dean, and Derek “MixedByAli” Ali and many more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is professional mixing and mastering. I enhance their songs by improving clarity, balance, and overall impact, and prepare the final masters for all major platforms. I also combine this with production, arrangement, or songwriting when needed. I provide these services for musicians, video game developers, and film projects alike.
