I write verses, hooks, and full songs, and I'm big on finding flows and lyrics that actually fit the artist circumstance, scenario, or theme.
As a rapper, I can go melodic, weird, playful, aggressive, conversational, or somewhere in between. I love playing with cadence and finding pockets that aren't always the obvious choice.
I also produce, especially hip-hop, alternative R&B, and music that lives somewhere between genres. Being an artist myself means I'm usually thinking about the song as a whole and not just my piece of it.

Interview with Rugrat Nami
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm really proud of the track Jaramillo by A.Valley and MJ the Sensei featuring me as a rapper (I have the last verse). I'm always proud of my collaborations, but that was such a fun record to record and I love the adlibs. Listening back it sounds so lighthearted.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you like, but don't feel like you need to have everything figured out before you reach out. Send references, tell me what you're going for, and also give me enough room to bring something to the record that you might not have thought of.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been writing songs since I was a kid and started releasing music as Rugrat Nami in my 20s. Since then I've spent years writing, rapping, producing, performing, and DJing. I'm also the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of FamFrequency Productions, where I work directly with emerging artists and creators on developing their sound, ideas, and careers. Being around so many different kinds of artists has made my ear sharper and made me a much stronger collaborator. I know how to listen to what someone is trying to make and help bring it out of them.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Personality, first and foremost. I love playing with words, finding unexpected pockets, and figuring out what a song needs to make it feel memorable. I’m not interested in giving every record the same flow or formula.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Erykah Badu, Tyler the Creator, Solange, Queen Latifah, Tierra Whack, bbymutha, Rico Nasty, and Childish Gambino. I'm usually drawn to artists who build their own world and aren't afraid to get a little weird with it.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time I'm writing and recording verses, hooks, or full songs. A lot of clients come to me with a beat and a general idea of what they want to say, and I help turn that into something that actually feels good on the record.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm working on an EP for myself. It will be out soon on Soundcloud. Before I post that though I will be posting my single "Graduation Party." Keep an ear out for it.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you don't love it, get rid of it. It has no place in your work.
