A distinctive, genre-agnostic composer and sound designer with three decades of experience across TV, exhibitions, branding and advertising, working with clients from BMW to Warp Records and rooted mainly in the electronic realm. I have collaborated with Hans Zimmer, remixed Jean Jacques Perrey and created an album for The School of Life.
I've been making leftfield electronic music that blends real and unusual instruments since the mid 90s. I began by releasing music as Freeform and touring with the legendary electronic act Autechre. In the decades since, I've taken on a wide range of commissions, from soundtracking projections on the Sydney Opera House to rebranding MTV to soundtracking immersive installations for Hyundai Microsoft and Samsung.
I offer composition, audio branding and mixing services. I have also worked extensively on multichannel speaker mixing projects of many kinds.

Interview with Simon Pyke
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won't push my own agenda. My mission is to get on the same page creatively, and make something we're both proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Bringing ideas to life, connecting with people, exploring ideas.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: In addition to what you do want, is there anything you're keen to avoid?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't worry too much if you're struggling with language to describe what you want, we'll find a way! And I'm here to suggest ideas when needed.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: first release as Freeform in 1995 (30 years then!!) with Warp records, toured with Autechre, got into advertising projects, soundtracking events (MTV awards, London Olympics logo launch), TV branding for Sky TV / MTV. Lots of commercial and art projects with Universal Everything. Continued producing and releasing music throughout.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I prefer not too, but if I'm forced a reviewer once said "other worldly without disappearing into the void"
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Playing is fun, build knowledge, retain naivety.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I see myself as somewhat genre agnostic, I come from a world of exploratory electronic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening.. and a eagerness to try unusual solutions (when it makes sense!).
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A unique take. And an ability to listen to assist in achieving the vision of a client.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on job, tends to start with a chat about project expectations and ideas followed by an exploration phase of a day or two followed by refining to completion with revisions with client. I tend to work remotely, and communicate via email and / or video calls mostly.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a cosy hut at the end of my garden 100 metres from the South Downs in Sussex. I'm working in the box and with a few select mic pre's, modular synth a bunch of unusual electronic instruments and random acoustic stuff like percussion, organs, stuff like that. I have a field recording setup to record sounds outdoors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bullion / Collin Stetson / Steve Reich / Bjork / Jonny Greenwood / Hans Zimmer / Can / Lucretia Dalt / Thom Yorke / Brian Eno / Nils Frahm / Moondog / Fourtet / Timberland etc!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It's a broad selection, but recently I have worked on many large scale interactive installations and art exhibitions, short films, advertising projects and audio logos.
