Adam Winkis on SoundBetter

Hello there! We know how much it takes to get your song to this stage! We believe affordability shouldn’t sacrifice quality so we want to help your vision come to life best we can!

Hey! I’m Adam! I’m a music fan first and foremost but I sing and play guitar in one band and play drums in another! I know how hard it can be to try execute an idea and finally be ready to release just for the finishing touches to be out of reach financially. My goal is to offer quality you’ll be happy with at a reasonable and affordable rate. Happy to revise as needed and no track limits/extra charges for larger projects. Already have a mix engineer lined up and need your session cleaned up? I'm happy to comb through and clean up those files so you can send to mix with confidence! Stuck on those last few lines to perfect your lyrics or vocal melody? Lets collaborate! I've found it extremely helpful to bounce ideas and different visions back and forth especially when writing lyrics. If I feel like I won’t be able to help your vision/project I will be upfront about it!

Tell me about your project and how I can help, through the 'Contact' button above.

Adam is a multi-talented musician/producer! He’s a motivator, a visionary, and a laid-back honest dude. I’ve enjoyed working with him on my EP - ZERO and couldn’t have brought it to life without his dedication to the work and his ear for music. Truthfully the best experience I have ever had writing/recording together. 5/5 💪

Interview with Adam Winkis

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: If I'm recording a session, I will often opt to have the artists lay down a guitar and vocal scratch track, then the official drum track and layer the rest of the instruments on top of that. Once the foundation is set we can add and take away/re-record as necessary. If I'm mixing a song, I'll comb through every track to ensure there's no lip smacking, buzzes or pops that don't need to be there and make sure everything is all tidy and ready to go.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Recording my first EP (Weigh Boat) and the Mike Messina EP - Zero. I tracked and played a variety of instruments on both projects. While we made many mistakes and said a lot of "ahh next time we'll do _____" people have overwhelmingly commented on how great the quality and songwriting is.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Writing and recording my new Band's album.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Matty Harris - 1000%

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: They're different color crayons, sometimes you need a green and other times you need a yellow... Just use whatever sounds good or achieves what you're chasing. There are no rules.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: Will give everything my full and honest effort and keep it affordable.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Really enjoy hearing what other people are doing from all over. It's always inspiring.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: I'll update this once it happens lol

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: If something was recorded poorly... its going to be obvious especially since mixing and mastering puts the specimen under a microscope essentially... "fix it in the mix" has a rare success rate.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Timeline is a big one. I want to set realistic expectations. Reference mixes and the sound they hear in their head/vibe they're chasing.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Explore your options, there are many great experienced engineers out there but reach out! Send me a message! Happy to just hear what you have going on and if it's not something I can tackle maybe I can recommend someone!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Orange cab with v-30 speakers, Gibson LPJ (p90), Black 1176, Yamaha drum kit, TAMBOURINE.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I've been recording and writing for atleast 20 years now. Mixing has been a new venture (about 3 years now). Always been something I've done and worked towards.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Laid back, easy to work with yet extremely motivated. Let's get more art out into the world but lets leave the BS and stress behind.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: You! But Kendrick Lamar would be cool too...lol

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Always try to get your recorded source as close to the sound you want as much as possible during tracking. Technology is great and "fix it in the mix" can happen every now and then but the energy thrives with the actual performance and that is what I try and capture while tracking.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I'm most familiar with fast, aggressive punk rock and adjacent genres. However, I really do enjoy and listen to many styles of music every single day. I'm always willing to expand my skills and try and tackle a genre or sound that is new to me.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Not sure if it's a skill but I'm very laid back yet motivated and am eager to get stuff done - no stress. Good vibes only!

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: An optimistic, fresh set of ears and ideas! Happy to provide feedback and happy to have my opinions rejected. This is YOUR vision.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Right now I have a simple Presonus 1824c to keep the Piano and Organ fired up as well as the Guitar Cabs, Bass Cabs, DI lines and Vocals mic'd up at all times ready to record. I primarily use Logic to track and mix.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Honestly anything I've heard good or bad haha I always try to understand why I like something or why I don't and what would I want to change (if anything).

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Collaborating to help bring ideas and sounds to life whether if be mixing, editing or writing.
