Interview with Emmanuel O'Neal Gerenge

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m especially proud of my track “Wataweza Kweli,” where I handled both the mixing and mastering. It’s one of my best-sounding releases, clean, dynamic, and balanced. I managed to capture the emotion and energy I wanted while keeping the sound crisp and modern, which helped the song connect with a wide audience.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on a new album

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital gives me the flexibility, speed, and precision I need to mix and master efficiently while maintaining that analog warmth through high-quality plugins and gear emulations.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat every project with the same passion and precision I give my own music, delivering clean, balanced, and industry-ready sound that brings your vision to life.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love taking a raw idea and transforming it into a polished, powerful track. Hearing the final mix come alive and seeing the artist’s reaction is the most rewarding part of what I do.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most clients ask how long it takes to mix and master a song, and if I can make it sound “industry standard.” I tell them I usually deliver within 2–3 days, and yes, I make sure your track hits that professional, streaming-ready level while keeping your original vibe intact.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Many people think mixing and mastering can fix a poorly recorded track, but in reality, it’s about enhancing what’s already there. A clean recording makes all the difference; mixing just brings out its full potential.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s your target sound or reference track? How do you want your vocals or instruments to feel in the mix? And what platform will you release the song on?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to examples of their work and make sure they understand your sound goals. Clear communication ensures the best results.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, audio interface, headphones, condenser mic, and my M-Audio BX5 D3 monitors.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started producing and mixing as a teenager, learning by creating my own songs. Over time, I built a studio setup and released more than 80 tracks independently, constantly refining my craft

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean, punchy, and emotionally charged. My mixes have clarity with a modern, energetic sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Burna Boy or Travis Scott because both blend energy and emotion effortlessly, and I enjoy crafting that kind of sonic depth

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always leave space in your mix. Sometimes, what you take out makes the biggest difference.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work on hip-hop, trap, afrobeat, and R&B, but I’m flexible across genres that demand groove and energy.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my ear for balance and space, knowing how to make every element sit perfectly in the mix while maintaining warmth and punch

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring depth, clarity, and emotion, ensuring the mix connects with listeners while preserving the artist’s original vibe.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Once I receive the stems, I start by organizing and cleaning up the session. Then I focus on gain staging, EQ, compression, and stereo imaging to bring the track to life. After the first mix, I master for loudness and polish, ensuring it translates well across all devices and platforms. I offer revisions to make sure the client is 100% satisfied.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My setup includes FL Studio, an M-Audio BX5 D3 monitor pair, a professional condenser microphone, an audio interface, studio headphones, and a pop filter. It’s fully treated for balanced acoustics, giving me the precision needed to deliver high-quality mixes and masters.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by engineers like Mike Dean, Dr. Dre, and Metro Boomin for their depth and clarity in mixes. I also draw influence from African producers like Juls and Sarz, who bring a rich, rhythmic feel that connects emotionally and culturally.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering Hip-Hop, Trap, Afrobeat, and R&B tracks, helping artists achieve a clean, balanced, and radio-ready sound. My focus is on clarity, punch, and emotion, making sure every song feels alive and competitive with today’s major releases.
