Interview with Panagiotis Machairas (SoNaP)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Im actually really proud of a project that hasnt been realeased yet and i dont know if its ever going to be, but its a song i made with a buddy that is an artist as well , we both wrote our own lyrics and sang them on another producer's beat and then i recorded us both then mixed and mastered the whole song but this specific song for some reason has a different place in my heart cause it was feeled with emotion during the writing , recording and mixing process as well so im attached to it differently. Plus it was a very good track overall mixing and mastering wise

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Im working on building my portfolio and running my own webpage to promote my work alongside platforms like soundbetter and also leveling up my skills through education and seminars/certificates. The latest one im actually attending is the Dante Certification Level 2 i already got the Level 1 completed and im certified with the badge and all.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No, not that i can think of

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: The digital world has made insane progress the past decade but the analog gear at least in music still has a certain touch that the digital world cannot offer. But to answer the question its actually a mix of both worlds that does the trick.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is that i will work your project to its full potential and treat it like my own

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I dont just like, i certainly love creating! Mixing is like taking a few pieces sculpting them to give them a better form than their natural one and make them shine in a whole new way while maintaining their feel

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you charge for revisions? My answer is pretty straight forward. I give up to 2 free revisions. After that there is a surcharge. I'm always trying to satisfy the customers from the first mix but i also like to have their touch on the final mix so im glad to receive a revision notice

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think the biggest misconception is that anybody can do it. I think that if you don't have what we call a musical ear its close to impossible to mix a song properly. You need to be able to understand and comprehend music a certain way to be in this line of work.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What mic they used to record the song, if it was recorded in a studio or an untreated environment, if they have done any processing on the vocals or stems themselves. That's the most common questions i ask which to be honest are easy to identify but its always better to know these things for sure.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just be precise at what you want out of your song and set an end goal. Also providing references can get you a better result overall 9 times out of 10.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Start with an Apollo Twin X interface, sphere DLX Modelling Mic , CL1B , Macbook and a pair of DT 900 PRO Xs. Thats my holy grail that can get you a long way in my opinion.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I studied Music Technology at IEK AKMH in Greece and im doing my bachelor's at Mhtropolitiko College. I started doing music when i was 16 though started off with beatmaking transitioned to writing my own lyrics on other people's beats and lastly fell in love with mixing when i started my studies and i saw pro tools for the first time.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Id love to work with NBA Youngboy cause he is a generational talent in my opinion.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Mainly Hip Hop , R&B , Trap , Supertrap , Dancehall and Drill but ive worked on plenty other genres as well.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Decisiveness and familliarity with the DAWs and gear i use giving me room to be creative with the mixing process rather than just being technical about it.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Expertise, technical knowledge and skills AND my artistic touch (given the fact that im an artist myself). All these contribute to reach a industry standard result for your song.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I get my stems lay em out on a mixing template i have and start editing each element on its own to get it at its best raw form possible. After that i level the whole project out and start mixing. Export the mix when its done listen to it on multiple devices and in different rooms, test it out. If im satisfied with the result (and the client is satisfied as well) i move on to the master.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Got a small home studio setup for now and looking to upgrade with the first given chance. Right now i have an AT2020 microphone going through a scarlett 2i2 interface straight to my pro tools or logic depending on what the client demands. For monitoring i got the sennheiser hd200 headphones and the presonus eris 3.5 monitors.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Mike Dean, MixedByAli, Jaycen Joshua, Andrew Scheps. Jason ''Cheese'' Goldberg

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mixing & mastering a song from start to finish
