James Bairian (The Gifted) on SoundBetter

Mixing engineer with 25+ years of experience, part of The Gifted (JUNO & Latin GRAMMY–nominated), focused on helping your song hit emotionally and sound release-ready.

I’m part of The Gifted, a Los Angeles–based producer, composer, and mixer duo. We’ve worked with artists like Tate McRae, Dasha, Kygo, Sophie Simmons, Bishop Briggs, Sam Tinnesz, and Sam Fischer, with hundreds of millions of streams across our catalog.

I’ve been making music for over 25 years — starting out in bands before moving into production, songwriting, and mixing. I work in Pro Tools through a hybrid analog setup with a 16-channel SPL MixDream and outboard bus compression and EQ, adding depth, width, and punch so your track feels bigger, more dynamic, and ready for release. My songwriting background helps me approach mixing with a strong sense of musicality — knowing when to let things breathe and when to push for something bold. I’m easy to work with, quick to communicate, and focused on making sure you’re 100% happy with the final mix.

Through my company, Headquarters Music, I’ve built strong relationships with directors, music supervisors, and film/TV producers, leading to placements in projects like We Were Liars, YOU, The Resident, Scream, Love Island, Younger, The Big Bang Theory, Netflix’s Pop Star Academy: Katseye, Ready or Not, and more.

Ready to take your mix to the next level? Let’s make it happen. Send me your track, and I’ll let you know exactly how I can help.

Interview with James Bairian (The Gifted)

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I’ve been doing this for about 25 years. I started out playing in bands, then moved into production and songwriting before eventually finding my way to mixing. There’s something about finding the magic in a song and making the best parts shine that never gets old. Mixing is where I get to be creative, experiment, and lose myself in the process — it’s honestly my favorite part of making music..

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Leaving headroom and understanding the dynamics of a song are key to achieving a great-sounding mix. That doesn’t mean it can’t be competitively loud — it’s about letting the mix breathe and leaving space for the mastering stage to do its job. I focus on balance, depth, and feel, making sure every mix translates with power and emotion without being over-compressed.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: Coming from a background in songwriting and production, I approach mixing with a strong sense of musicality. Understanding the emotion and intent behind a song is half the battle. Some mixes need to feel open and natural; others call for bold, creative choices. Listening deeply to the performance, the production, and the song itself is key to crafting a beautiful mix — something that only comes from years of experience.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I mix in Pro Tools through a hybrid analog setup with a 16-channel SPL MixDream and outboard bus compression and EQ, giving your track more depth, width, and punch — so it feels bigger, more open, and ready for release.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
