Interview with Duriel Daley
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working out the different arrangements and harmony parts that work well and compliment the song. Then finally, hearing it all come together at the end.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, sound card, headphones, microphone and a MIDI keyboard. (I’m definitely not a keyboard player but I can rustle up a quick beat if I get bored lol)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: A mix of old school soul, smooth R&B but can take you to church with the big gospel choir-like vocals.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: JP Cooper & James Morrison. They both have great and unique tones. That mix of soul but definitely hearing the influence of gospel music also.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I think it’s always good to double up and send more than 1 take, maybe a different variation of the chorus for example. This way, the artist is able to choose their favourite one.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have quite a wide range so I’m able to sing and layer all vocal parts myself. The soprano, alto & tenor.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once I receive the track, I usually listen to it a couple times. Not coming up with any ideas but just to get a vibe of the song. I then break it down by sections and put it on loop to see what ideas come to mind.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a Apple Mac computer with Logic Pro X software, a sE220a microphone & Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 sound card.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Artists who take great care in arranging harmonises like Luther Vandross, Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin. I could name so many but I would be here all day!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I either help producers with lead vocals on their tracks or I help enhance an artists’ song with layered background vocals.
