Mastering

Markus Abendroth - zodiaque on SoundBetter

I love mastering and I'm really passionate about it. I do analog and ITB - whatever feels good. Apple Music certified.

Started mixing and recording in 2005 and mastering in 2015. I had the luck to work with great musicians like Dota Kehr, Max Prosa, Clueso, Die Höchste Eisenbahn, Crucchi Gang, Kai Schumacher, Hotel Rimini, Juli Gilde and many others. I mixed and mastered some top ten albums in Germany.
I use great analog and digital gear but the most important thing to me is the feeling and the vibe.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Markus Abendroth - zodiaque

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Last Dota record. I recorded, mixed and mastered it. Made it to #6 in german album charts.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Speak Low, Crucchi Gang, Die Höchste Eisenbahn

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Andi Fins

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both of course. Depends on the music. Analog for color and vibe and digital for what it can do. Plug ins can do crazy stuff these days.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I give my best and wont stop until the clients are happy. Otherwise

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: When the result feels really good and the clients are happy.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you make me a vinyl master as well? For sure!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Clients are often concerned about streaming levels. I'm not. I think making it sounds as good as possible is the key.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your vision or do you have special wishes for the master/mix? Shall I jsut give it a go and we check again for feedback?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just write me and lets talk.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Oh thats hard. ATC ASL 150, Curve Bender, Goly Porter Grinder, Crane Song Hedd Q, Watkins Copy Cat :)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started in 2005 and became a pro in 2007. Mostly recording and mixing. Mastering started in 2015 and it became my obsession.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Not to clean. I like dirt, but I know - Mastering - sometimes it must be super clean, sometimes not.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Paul McCartney because he is a soooo good.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Make decisions. Whats important and what needs to be in the background.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Handmade and electronic. As many mastering engineers I receive a broad range of styles. I don't work on stuff that I don't feel.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Empathy for the music and the client. Feeling the music and knowing my tools to work on it.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: It depends. I try to make it sound the best I can and to amplify the character of it - if it is possible and necessary.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Communication is the first thing. Always want to know the vision and the vibe of the client. What is his intention. Being on the same frequency is important. Than listening the music. And than the ideas come. Making lot of breaks and looking for feedback not to late.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Its all about quality. Good monitoring is key for me. I use ATC ASL150 and Dutch & Dutch 8c in my second setup. Also Audeze LCD5 with Benchmark HPA4.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: good music inspires me. Always checking new stuff. But also listening music with my friends.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: 80% Mastering. Providing formats for streaming, vinyl and CDs
