Interview with Mazzinoelle
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I sang a cover of Fade Into You by Mazzy Star with my mom and it was special to me. Her voice shines through the song and I was able to show her some of the recording process. We will continue on this project! I also wrote lyrics that were impactful to me. Sometimes I will save lyrics in my notes and go awhile without viewing them - when I come back to them I’m inspired by what I could write at that time (sometimes don’t feel the full effect from my words right away when writing). Thanks for reading!! -maz
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m working on getting booked up for performance opportunities. I also make mashups currently with an original touch - making a background track and covering a couple popular songs that sound well together.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: N/a but excited to meet some.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: A mix. I like to use old instruments and put in the sounds from analog - trends come back around in time and we see this in fashion as well. I see it in music a lot where music styles that were appreciated at a time will resurface. Being able to add both digital and analog gives a nice balance.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I do not often make promises but I will guide through a cool experience and the promise could be translated in that they will have something tangible to walk away with.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like changing lives and helping someone create something they can be proud of. I want them to leave with something representative of them or their lives and story.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “How long does it take?” It depends on aspects within the piece of art, and the complexities. 1 day to a week is often my answer. I back it up with these questions - Is there recording involved - what instruments are wanted - do we add other elements that take longer to recreate in sound?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That all of the work created has to be specific to the producer’s preferred genre and style. A producer should be able to step out of what they like to listen to and be able to create a song that may differ from their preferred styles.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What styles do you like? What are some goals in music? What are you looking to achieve with this project? How does this project contribute to you - positive or negative? If you could learn to do some piece of the project on your own, what would you want to learn?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Pay attention to credibility but also dedication behind the work. Look for those who put effort, knowledge, and understanding of different styles into their work. No bias is helpful at times because there may be a style that the producer doesn’t often listen to, but can still make for a client’s style and wants.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Life jacket, water filtration, ukulele, lighter, a paraglider (could jump off a high point and get off the island)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am a music teacher - voice and production. I want to open a school. I perform at gigs and events. I want to sell my beats, music, vocals, etc. and positively affect in the ways I have been effected.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I can be rushed but efficient. I take what I know and apply it with a willingness to learn and build. My style is honest and relatable.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would want to work with a well versed and dedicated artist who puts energy passion and respect into their work. Showcasing their styles and certain qualities is important and I’d be honored to work with someone who takes time to add flavor into their work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Enjoy the work you’re doing, and take time to focus on harmonies and beats that are relatable. Dissonance is good for some songs however could clash in a pop song, so knowing the style and when to add certain elements in will help.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic, singer/songwriter, indie pop,
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocals
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring knowledge and credibility, having gone to school for music. I put passion into my work and have been saved by music at times and want to also positively contribute to others and the song overall.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I enjoy practicing over instrumental tracks for songwriting. Building a song first is important - I often start with a beat then overlay midi information and tracks on top, building harmonies and sounds that blend together.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: At home - Logic Pro, midi setup, places with good acoustics for vocals, RODE microphone
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I create timeless songs accustomed to their style and preferences. I take notes on what they enjoy and try to add elements that align with a vision.
