Interview with Aj Rothermel

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently working on new tracks for one of my own bands. Guitars and bass are almost done, then moving on to drums and vocals!

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I will always ask for a reference track, a song that you want your track to resemble sonically. I will ask if you want your project to come out polished or if you want something raw and less processed.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Find someone who is not just passionate about their own work, but yours too.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Purposeful production. Determine what is most beneficial for the project and the client to make it sound as great as possible.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: If it doesn't sound good from the source, it will not sound good in the mix!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Punk and metal genres

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Recording live drums, or producing the artist (making sure you give the best performance possible!)

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I can record bands live or track each element separately and can easily work with tempo changes and time alignment. I am flexible in the tracking process, whether drums come first or guitars and bass come first.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I'm an Intern Engineer at Conway Sound, with access to multiple production spaces and plenty of microphone inputs for bands. Ability to record any live instrument or create amazing tones in the box.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Session and live drumming, recording, and mixing
