Interview with Valentin Cuvecle

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m proud of Cercle Odyssey (Best Music Documentary 2025 - ShortFilmsFestival). As a sound engineer, I crafted the behind-the-scenes audio, balancing live elements and voiceovers to capture the magic of the project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently mixing an R&B EP for an indie singer and sound design for a short film in Paris.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet, but I’m open to building collaborations with other professionals here.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Hybrid. Analog brings warmth and depth, digital brings precision and flexibility. Together, they deliver the best of both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I’ll deliver a professional, emotional, and competitive mix that respects your artistic vision.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Helping artists hear their music come alive exactly as they imagined—or even better.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: “How long will it take?” → Usually 1–3 days, depending on the complexity (and the bookings). “Can you make it sound like X artist?” → Yes, I can approach that vibe, but I’ll also give it your unique identity because everyone one has an unique voice.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing is just about levels and EQ. It’s about translating emotions into sound. Oh and no, we're not DJ's, I mean it's another discipline ;)

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s the story or emotion behind your song? Which artists or references inspire you? What’s your release goal (Spotify, club, radio, etc.)?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who listens to your artistic vision as much as they master the technical side. The best mixes happen in collaboration.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Neumann, an Apollo Twin, a MacBook, Focal monitors, and a Xylophone (to not get bored when I'll be out of battery).

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: ’ve been producing and mixing for 12+ years, starting as a musician and evolving into a full-time sound engineer. Along the way, I trained with Mixed by Ali and worked on short films, documentaries, and 400+ songs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean, vocal-focused, emotional, with subtle creative twists that make each track unique.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: SZA. Her vocal style is both raw and ethereal, and I’d love to create textures that match her emotional delivery.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more. A great mix isn’t about adding endless plugins—it’s about using the right tools sparingly to serve the song.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Rap, RnB, Hip-Hop, Pop, and Electronic (House/Techno/Trap), but I love crossing genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Vocal mixing. I know how to bring out presence, warmth, and dynamics while keeping the voice natural and expressive.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, balance, and emotional impact. My goal is to highlight the artist’s voice and message while giving the track a competitive, professional sound.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by understanding the artist’s vision, then clean and balance the stems, focusing on vocals first. Once the foundation is clear, I add creative effects, automation, and spatial elements to make the track stand out.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My setup blends high-end analog gear and modern digital tools: Apollo x8p interface, Neumann TLM 103 & Shure SM7B mics, UAD & FabFilter plugins, SoundToys, Plugin Alliance, and Yamaha monitors. This hybrid setup gives me warmth, clarity, and precision.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by engineers like Mixed by Ali and Curtis "Circut", whose vocal work is both raw and polished, and producers like Kendrick Lamar and Doja Cat, who bring emotion and uniqueness to every track.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Short films / Documentary audio mixing - Vocal tracking (studio record), vocal and instrumental mixing, edit and creative effects, mastering
