Interview with Stratos Mixing Athan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There are bigger and more well-known projects I’ve worked on, but one of the projects I’m most proud of is a Greek band called 24 Grada. They combine a hard rock and even metal-style rhythm section with traditional instruments, along with a mix of extreme rock and rap vocals. It’s a very unique and pioneering sound. I was the mixing engineer for the record and also recorded the drums

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m never without a project. Right now, I’m working on a Greek traditional record, and I’m also in the pre-production stage of a singer-songwriter project

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I choose hybrid. It gives me the best of both worlds—analog warmth and character, with the precision and flexibility of digital. And of course, the ability to recall sessions is a huge advantage

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I bring songs to life through detailed, emotionally-driven mixes rooted in the warmth of real instruments. If i mix it will sound great.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Everything. Music is my passion, and mixing is my passion. It’s the only thing I’ve ever done in my life—the only profession I’ve had as an adult—and there’s nothing else I’d ever want to do. This is who I am.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: People often worry about whether their song will sound exactly like the band they love. My answer is always the same: don’t focus too much on copying someone else. Be your own artist with your own sound. We’ll use your references as a guide, but the goal is to bring out your unique personality in the mix.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about my job is that it’s easy and that the gear does all the work. In reality, it takes years of experience and knowledge to truly understand how to bring a mix to life. It’s not the gear doing the work—it’s the person behind it making the critical decisions.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What I usually ask clients is: What are you planning to do with the song? Do you have any reference tracks? And how was the song produced and recorded? I want to get a clear picture of what they've done and what they expect from me, so I can deliver exactly what the track needs.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be clear about what you need from me, and let’s make sure we share the same vision for the song. That way, we can avoid misunderstandings and make the most of our time and resources.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: The five things I’d take to a deserted island? My PC, my console, my SSL Fusion, my SSL Bus Compressor, and a router—so people can still send me songs to mix!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I’ve been in the studio for over 20 years, working on all kinds of recordings and productions. These days, I’m shifting my focus entirely to mixing—it’s the part of the process I’m most passionate about.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is clean, warm, and punchy—I focus on clarity and depth while making sure the music hits with the right energy and emotion

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: So many come to mind, but I’d love to work with Foo Fighters. I’ve always loved their songs , Plus, their productions are some of my all-time favorites

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Before jumping into mixing, take time to organize and clean up your session—edit timing issues, remove noise, label tracks. A clean session speeds up the creative process and lets you focus on the music

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I've worked in just about every genre of music you can think of, but my strengths—and the styles I work with most often—are singer-songwriter, pop-rock, funk, and honestly, anything that involves a real band.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing real instruments .

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I check the tracks for weaknesses—both in terms of sound and any editing needs. Only after addressing everything do I move on to mixing. My mixing setup is hybrid: I mix in the box, then go out through the Antelope Orion converter to my Soundcraft console for analog summing. After that, I run the mix through my bus processing chain, which includes the SSL Fusion and the SSL Bus Compressor. If needed, I apply additional analog processing here and there using the console and my outboard gear, such as the 1176 compressor, the LA-2A, and other equipment I have.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: As for my studio setup, I have two live rooms and a control room. The live rooms are used for recording live bands or overdubs. In the control room, my mixing setup is hybrid: I mix in the box, then go out through the Antelope Orion converter to my Soundcraft console for analog summing. After that, I run the mix through my bus processing chain, which includes the SSL Fusion and the SSL Bus Compressor. If needed, I apply additional analog processing here and there using the console and my outboard gear, such as the 1176 compressor, the LA-2A, and other equipment I have.
