Interview with Lucas Liao
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: If I had analog in my personal studio ill probably use it, but for the love of it. Nowdays digital just takes over. Analag is not a "necessity" What sounds better? Thats subjective.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Ill work on their proyects as it were mine personally. So dont worry. Ill give my 100% to it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Talk to people and to make their visions come to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What did I do? What are my secrets? What process did I do to the vocals or drums. I reallt dont answer those questions. But I do answer: How much time it will take? - Depends on the project Are you using "standard" "professional" plugins for the mix and master? - Yes but because you and I want to. Its really not necessary in order to make a song sound professional :)
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: There is no misconception, nobody outside the music or creators world knows what a mixing or mastering engineer is.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What they want to achive with their songs? What are their references songs and artists? How many multitracks are they working with?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look up for a provider that really cares about you and your songs. Im not better than you just because im taking care of your project. It is a privilege for me to be able to work on this with you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An ukelele
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music, since I was 10. Mixing and mastering engineer 3 years already.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Bold and clear
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ill like to work with NSQK. He as a producer and artist is top tier. Would really like to be around a creative mind like him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is better. Dont overcomplicate it. The basics never fails. But to make it work, be yourself-
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on different kind of music. From Jazz to Trap. I do work mostly on Pop, R&B, Hip-hop, Trap or Latin Music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill when it comes to mix or master is that im patient. I like to listen what artist have to say, about their songs, about my work. Every feedback that makes me or the song better, ill take it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I dont only mix and master. I bring what it already has, but that its just hidden. I take every emotion that is supposed to trasmit to the listener and enhanced it. I make sure that song is sonically vivid and of course, coherent.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process while mixing or mastering changes between projects. But for a mix I would noramlly sit down, listen to the demo, have some references ready, a talk with the artist of where he wants to go with the song. I normally need background and vision and start from there. With a master I would listen the mix have some other references and I would check what do I have emotionally and technically from the mix and hear what the artist has to say and go from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: As a "contemporary creator" I truly believe that is not about the gear but the artist/engineer. I keep my studio setup basic, pair of monitors, computer, headphones, interface, MIDI Keyboards, pair of guitars. Sound ID for room and heaphones calibration and digital gear.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have a lot of inspirations, artist and producers like NSQK, Tyler The Creator or Tainy inspire me a lot.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work that I do for my collaborations is mixing and mastering. I vocal comping or vocal tunning only too.
