Interview with Emile Neveu | Ōxymore
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m proud of mastering one of my own tracks that was later played by Amelie Lens during a major festival. It proved that my sound design & technical approach delivers clarity, power, and impact even on massive sound systems. Exactly what I aim to achieve for every client.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. It gives me surgical precision, full recall, and consistency, all essential for modern mastering. With the right tools and critical listening, I can achieve warmth and depth that rival any analog chain.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every track with the same care and precision as if it were my own. Delivering a master that’s loud, clear, and true to your artistic vision, every single time on time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is the mix of social connection and technical precision. Collaborating with artists, understanding their vision, and using my technical passion to bring it to life with clarity and power.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think mastering is just making a track louder. In reality, it’s about balance, translation, and emotional impact, making sure the music hits hard everywhere without losing its clarity or dynamics.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always start by asking about the artist’s reference tracks, goals for the release, and how they want their music to feel, not just sound. I also check if there’s anything specific they like or dislike in their current mix, so I can tailor the mastering to their vision.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Always look for an engineer who listens first. Technical skill matters, but understanding your artistic vision is what makes the result truly work. Ask for clear communication, realistic deadlines, and examples of consistent, professional results, that’s how you’ll find the right fit.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Audeze MM-500 headphones, my laptop with Ableton Live, FabFilter Pro bundle, Standard Clip, and Ozone Advanced. That’s all I need to deliver clean, powerful masters, even on a desert island.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been producing and engineering electronic music for over 8 years. Starting as a producer and DJ, I developed a deep understanding of sound design, dynamics, and frequency balance, which naturally led me to specialize in mixing and mastering for other artists.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, powerful, and versatile. I focus on clarity, punch, and cohesion. Delivering professional, balanced masters that translate perfectly across club systems and streaming platforms.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tars, young producer very polyvalent & creative. He can great any track style, clear, punchy & loud.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t chase loudness. Chase impact. A tight low-end and controlled mids will make your track hit harder in a club than any limiter ever could.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on electronic music, mainly : Hard Techno, Hard bounce, Tekno, Psytrance, and Groovy Techno. My focus is on high-energy underground styles that require clarity, punch, and strong low-end control.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is understanding what each artist really wants : combining technical precision with empathy to deliver loud, punchy, and balanced masters that keep clarity and dynamics intact, making every track hit hard without distortion or fatigue.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, punch, and balance. Ensuring every track sounds powerful, cohesive, and ready for any club system or streaming platform, while staying true to the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by analyzing your mix to identify potential improvements before mastering. Then I apply a precise mastering chain tailored to your track’s style and energy. After delivery, you get up to 3 revisions to ensure the result perfectly fits your artistic vision and performs well on every system.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is acoustically treated and built for precision monitoring. I work mainly on Audeze MM-500 headphones and Adam Audio monitors, powered by a transparent digital mastering chain including FabFilter Pro bundle, Ozone Advanced 9, Standard Clip, and Analog Obsession plugins. My setup allows me to achieve consistent, high-quality results that translate perfectly across club systems and streaming platforms.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by engineers and artists who push sonic precision and energy — names like Luca Pretolesi, Matt Colton, and artists such as Creeds or Amelie Lens for their attention to detail and power on big systems.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in mastering & mixing electronic tracks, focusing on clarity, punch, and tonal balance. Most of my clients are techno and psytrance producers looking for loud, clean, and professional-sounding results.
