Josh Hanger on SoundBetter

Worked with artists like Isaiah Dreads, King Aiden and Guap Child as well as helping hundreds of other artists across the world create more professional sounding music as well helping them to improve their craft. My music was compared to major record label releases by multiple industry professionals.

Hi I am Josh, I'm from the United Kingdom and I am a music producer as well as songwriter and mixing engineer with just under 6 years of experience working with various artists across the world.

I began selling beats when I was 13, collaborating with mainly musicians in America without them knowing how old I actually was so I must have been doing something right. I started a brand called NOWEY and did everything under that name as I wanted to be anonymous. Over the last 5 or so years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many underground records, one of which being "break your heart" by Guap Child. I have also worked in person with Isaiah Dreads during my time at college, who is a big artist locally, particularly in the hip-hop scene.

What I am offering is Industry Standard production of instrumentals in my specialised genres (hip-hop, trap, rnb, pop, garage, underground rap, afro, and reggaeton). Moreover if needed I can supply reference tracks to boost your creative process and potentially give you ideas you may not have thought of. This will include vocal tracks with a professional standard of mixing and backing vocals if fitting. On top of this I am well trained in mixing tracks, both instrumentals and vocals so if you are looking to get your recorded tracks par with your vision I intend to make that happen.

Interview with Josh Hanger

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My most recent project was an EP I put together called "Who Knows" which was my first solo body of work. I did all of the production, vocals, mixing and mastering as well as the concepts and songwriting. It's a blend of vintage RnB and modern trap and pop, mixing a lot of acoustic guitars, bouncing boom-bap style drums, trap 808s and chopped vocal samples. It was a mix of all the music I surrounded myself with.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: No current projects of my own, but I am always building my catalogue of work and also collaborating frequently with artists.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: n/a

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I like that you get to feel analog, but my lack of use makes me pick digital. Additionally, it's always developing and improving every year

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to provide my support and ideas. I will do everything I can to achieve what you need.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The freedom, and the feeling of making something new that didn't exist before I started.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long did it take you to have success through producing? I didn't see regular success until around a year into producing, but I did manage to sell my first beat a couple months into making music when I was 13.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: No real misconceptions, but sometimes people are confused that I don't release my music. I choose to hold my records for other artists to use, as I prefer just dealing with the creation side of things.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always offer online calls as part of my deals. As I am from the UK and I work with a lot of people overseas I have become very used to hosting online studio sessions, so I ask them about that and how we can make that work if needed.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Has to be a Laptop, Interface, Mic, Headphones and a mouse because I can't use the touchpad at all.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I began making music when I was 13 during lockdown and then began selling beats a few months later. For around 2 years I focused on building my NOWEY platform on Beatstars, frequently uploading new beats, collaborating with other producers and posting on social media. then I began working with artists on a more full time basis offering mass production and engineering deals for them individually in exchange for a larger and more consistent income. To this day this the approach I have been using as well as developing my own individual sound outside of working with artists. I am now coming up 19, giving me nearly 6 years of experience.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Musically, I like to drag vintage and underground modern elements into a Hip-Hop and R&B box. This sort of combines the music that I listen to, but I frequently work in multiple styles.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Drake, I think a lot of artists experiment with new sounds, which is something I do frequently when I'm making music, but Drake does it still at the top of the pyramid, and that's where I'm trying to get to.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: offset the hi-hats slightly off beat (only 2 or 3 ms late)

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: In my opinion, it's my ability to bring an idea to reality. I also take pride in my productivity. I like to work fast but of course, with quality.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: A creative blend of new and existing ideas to make something fresh but familiar.

  33. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  34. A: If you have a clear vision I think just go with it and do your best to get that across to me. I really enjoy that process of fulfilling that and don't be afraid to tell me to adjust things to get them just how you need them

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: Trap, Rnb, Hip-Hop, Afro, Dancehall, Pop, Indie Rnb

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to work the melody/sample first. Then lay down any vocal ideas if I have any. Then add drums and bass and then add more vocal ideas if that gives me more inspiration. With my mixing I bring every vocal recording into my template in Ableton and begin to mould my vocal chain around their voice and once I am happy I save the preset with their name for future use and then adjust accordingly depending on each song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a very basic home setup with a focusrite interface and 3inch presonus studio monitors. Everything runs though my laptop which I bought a few years ago, it's very portable and allows me to work on the go. I also have a blue ember condenser microphone which allows me to record my vocal tracks and other ideas as well. I also have access to a local studio separate from home at a college as a result of me helping out there. They have a soundproof booth, large industry standard mackie speakers and a mixing desk as well.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I think an artist/producer like Tyler, The Creator is inspiring because of how he pushes boundaries and always brings a breath of fresh air with each project and doesn't just stick to trending sounds, he keeps developing his own. Also that a lot of his work is self produced shows the level of care he puts into his projects and that's something I like to try to adapt.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly produce their songs for them and mix their tracks down. More recently I've been getting involved with their creative process and giving them more ideas to create the best possible end product.
