Interview with Chris Borelli

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Don't let credentials alone be your deciding factor. There are tons of very seasoned engineers on platforms like these that are just late to the party but just as talented as the most decorated folks on the same platform. Give the little guys a shot.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My Neumann mic, my laptop, my interface, my charger, my hard drive.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: 15 years

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Reductive first, then polish.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I'd love to work with Travis Scott. I feel like my mixing style matches the quality and texture of most of his catalogue. It'd be a lot of fun trying that out.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Trust the plugins but trust your ear even more.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Hip hop, r&b, pop

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is my mixing abilities.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring an imaginative sense of sound design and fx application to every song. All while staying on brief and meeting the demands of the client's desires.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: For most mixes, I start by balancing the beat stems / general cleanup with the instrumental. For vocals, I take on a reductive approach before adding polish and shine and compression etc. Really honing the raw frequency to be as clean and concise as possible. Then adding all the bells and whistles to make it really pop and stand out. I provide competitive mastering as well - proper loudness, nice and rich and full final product.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: Simple home studio setup - Steinberg UR-RT4 interface, Neumann U87 mic, simple KRK monitors (for now), Beyerdynamic headphones

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Ali (mix engineer for TDE), Leslie Braithwaite, Ryan Leslie, Charlie Puth, Pharrell, Hit Boy

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I most commonly am mixing and mastering hip hop / r&b / pop music but not limited to those genres.
