Luie Stylianou on SoundBetter

Engineered for legends such as Judas Priest, David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. Worked with Johnny Depp to record The Tiger Lillies for the soundtrack of his latest film.

I spent 3 years in-house at Mark Knopfler's world-renowned British Grove Studios. The success of my recent mixing for Judas Priest has been reported by Forbes and I have been interviewed by a number of industry-leading publications and podcasts such as Ultimate Classic Rock and Hi-Fi News about the mixing process.

'When I first heard "Run Of The Mill" the way Tom [producer] and Luie [mixer] had worked on it, I got really emotional. I finally heard it like I did in the room. They were able to give Rocka Rolla its due and make it worthy.' - Rob Halford, lead singer of Judas Priest on the 50th Anniversary Mix of their debut album

Luie has engineered and mixed many sessions I’ve played on where the styles have been really varied. He can adapt his skills effortlessly to different genres because he’s passionate and knowledgable about his work and puts the artist first. The results have always been excellent and it’s a pleasure to work with him.

Luie mixed four tracks for my band this summer and really blew us all away with his first versions. His highly trained ear is evident through his acute attention to detail, his ability to create a profound sense of space and air in each mix, whilst packing a real punch in all the right places. A sound guy and a great mix engineer… what more could you want!

Luie engineered a live session for my band. Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable and talked us through what he was doing (and why he'd selected certain microphones and placements), he made the session feel really comfortable and wasn't afraid to suggest alternative engineering practices to adapt to the way our band played. Luie is extremely pleasant to be around, and made me sound great!

Luie has mixed multiple songs I've produced, and every time the experience has been fantastic. He is quick, easy to communicate with, and most importantly, the mixes always come back sounding incredible.

I'm looking forward to working on more tracks with Luie soon!

I worked with Luie at Tilehouse Studios and he was an absolute treat to work with. My drums have never sounded better! He was able to translate what I was hearing in my head onto the track better than anyone I've ever worked with. He was so invested in the music and is such a lovely guy to work with. I couldn't recommend him higher!

Working with Luie on our EP was genuinely the best experience of my career. From the very first session, he took the time to really understand what we were trying to achieve, not just technically, but emotionally. What stood out most was how invested he became in the process, he cared about our songs as much as we did, and that energy pushed the whole project to another level.

The end result was without doubt the best music we’ve ever made, and so much of that is thanks to Luie’s skill, taste, and dedication. He’s a brilliant engineer and a creative partner. Thank you brother!

Luie is a consummate professional, with an incredibly high technical proficiency and attention to detail. It’s been a pleasure working with him on a number of my mixes - his ability to communicate his ideas, whilst also listening to your feedback is second to none. It’s no wonder that every mix he’s ever done for me sounds incredible. I will continue to work with Luie for the foreseeable, and I would highly recommend anyone reading this review does the same.

Interview with Luie Stylianou

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I love recording well-rehearsed bands to 16-track tape and capturing the essence of what makes them exciting to watch live. Having fewer tracks encourages the distillation of sounds unique to certain artists and efficient arrangements lend themselves to powerful mixes!

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Mixing the 50th Anniversary of Judas Priest’s debut album and working with the band’s longtime producer Tom Allom (Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Genesis) to elevate the initially poor sound, which contributed to disappointing commercial performance in 1974. Fast forward 50 years and the album debuted on three charts in the UK, reaching No. 7 in the Official Rock and Metal Albums chart.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: The perfect poached egg
