Interview with Form IV Audio
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have been a dedicated Pro Tools user since 2001 and currently run Pro Tools Studio, allowing for seamless workflow integration and lightning-fast editing. My setup features a Focusrite Clarett interface for pristine conversion and a pair of Genelec monitors for an incredibly accurate, transparent listening environment. I mix primarily "in the box" (ITB), leveraging modern, top-tier digital processing to achieve the maximum punch, clarity, and recall flexibility that fast-moving modern productions require.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am heavily inspired by mix engineers who push the boundaries of aggressive music while maintaining absolute sonic clarity, such as Josh Wilbur, Will Putney, Kurt Ballou, and Andy Sneap. When it comes to mastering, I look up to engineers who know how to make a heavy record slam without losing its dynamic depth, including Alan Douches, Ted Jensen, and Jens Bogren. I constantly study their work to refine my own approach to punch, width, and low-end translation.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is full-service mixing and mastering for heavy music, including hardcore, metal, punk, and aggressive rock. For mixing, I take raw multi-tracks and focus on carving out massive, high-energy guitar tones, making sure the drums hit with maximum punch, and dialing in vocals so they cut through dense arrangements. For mastering, I optimize the finished stereo mix so it sounds deep, wide, and aggressive while meeting standard commercial streaming loudness targets. Clients frequently hire me to deliver cohesive, radio-ready EPs and full-length albums.
